Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College volleyball battled fiercely against conference heavyweight Lynn University but lost a tightly-contested 3-0 match on Friday night at Streamline Sale Arena at Jenkins Field House. The Moccasins (3-11, 1-6 SSC) lost the match to the Fighting Knights (12-3, 5-2 SSC) by only nine points total, including a 26-24 second set and a 25-22 third set. The Mocs will finish their two-game homestand on Saturday as they host Nova Southeastern at 4 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a 4-4 start to the first set, the Fighting Knights began to pull away with an 11-4 run that gave them a 15-8 lead. Despite four straight points from the home side, Lynn kept Florida Southern just out of reach to take a 25-21 second-set win.
- The second set featured fourteen tie scores and five lead changes as the Moccasins and Fighting Knights battled. After trailing 10-9, Lynn mounted a 6-1 run to lead 15-11. The Mocs retaliated with a 5-1 run of their own, and from there the two squads were never separated by more than three points. FSC had match point at 24-23, but three-straight points from Lynn on two kills and a Moc error gave the away side a hotly-contested 26-24 second-set win.
- The third set saw an even closer contest than the previous flurry, with 16 tie scores and six lead changes throughout the set. After an 18-18 tie score, the Mocs benefited from three Lynn errors to threaten with a 22-20 scoreline. Lynn, however, ended the set with six-straight points on two FSC errors and three kills to take the third set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.
- Tierra Porter led the Mocs with nine kills and a .471 hitting percentage, followed by Lena Bondar with seven and three other Mocs with six kills (Raeley Matthews, Buse Ene and Rachael Martin). Freshman Matthews led the team with eleven digs. FSC out-blocked Lynn seven to six, led by Porter (3) and Ene (3).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Moccasins still lead the all-time series with a 33-12 record. At home the Mocs are now 18-5 all-time against the Fighting Knights.
- There were four Mocs with double-digit digs: Matthews (11), Erica Ronda (10), Hailey Williams (10) and Mika Garza (10) additionally helped the Mocs tie the mark for most digs in a three-set match for the season (53).
- The seven blocks tallied by the Mocs are the most for the team this season in a three-set match.
- The 34 kills are tied for second-most this season in a three-set match, with the previous mark set against Florida Tech on Sept. 28.
