Box Score YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - Florida Southern College women's lacrosse's opened the 2020 season with dominant win over Young Harris College on Friday evening. The eighth-ranked Mocs (1-0) jumped out to an 11-0 lead over the host Mountain Lions (1-1) en route to an 18-6 victory.
Senior Marina Jozokos led the way as she tallied five points on three goals and two assists. Ten additional Moccasins found the back of the net as Sarah Grady, Grace Glinecki, Brenna Smith, and Katie Yeagle all had a multi-goal game. Southern used four goalies in the victory as the Moccasin keepers combined for seven saves on 13 shots on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Maliah Benedetto won the opening draw to begin the new season for the Moccasins. Following a foul on the home team, Jokozos was awarded a free position attempt. With 28:34 on the clock, the senior fired home the first goal of the year for Florida Southern.
- The Moccasins would open the season on an 11-0 run, FSC put together a 3-0 run in a 53-second span. Grace Glinecki took a feed from Jozokos and slotted one past the Mountain Lion goalie for a 2-0 visitors lead. On the ensuing possession, the Mocs took the ball in their offensive zone and senior Catherine DeKorte found Benedetto who quickly made it 3-0, Florida Southern. Jozokos made it a 4-0 advantage in the Mocs favor as she would find the back of the net for the second time on the afternoon at the 25:52 mark of the first half.
- Five minutes later, Jozokos would put another free position shot past the Young Harris goalie for a 5-0 Moccasin lead. Following a timeout by the home team, senior Riley Bannatyne won the draw control and set up the Mocs offense for a quick goal as Benedetto made it 6-0 to open the game.
- Patricia Werker made her first of two saves on the afternoon as she stopped the free position shot from Aubrie Valvo at the 18:18 mark of the first half. Grady put the Mocs up 7-0 and sophomore Brenna Smith capitalized on a free position attempt to give the visitors an 8-0 lead with 16 minutes remaining in the first half and Bannatyne made it 9-0.
- Sophomore Katie Yeagle turned on the running clock as she pushed the Moccasin lead to double-digits, head coach Kara Reber would relieve her starting goalie and send in junior Brittany Iamele. Werker ended the game allowing no goals on a pair of shots. Yeagle would score the 11th goal of the game for the Moccasins. The Mocs shutout would end as Taylor Greenberg found the back of the net to put the home team on the board. Freshman Madison Tare would record her first collegiate goal in the final two minutes of the first half to give the visitors a 12-1 lead going into the halftime break.
- The Mocs and the Mountain Lions would trade goals throughout the final 30 minutes as Young Harris opened the half with its second goal on the night. Glinecki put the Mocs up 14-3 with 18:40 to go off a pass from Jozokos.
- Four minutes later, the Mocs would gift the home team a goal as a backward pass was sent right into the Mocs goal. Florida Southern would close out the game on a 4-2 run as Sophia Savaglio recorded her first official collegiate goal to make it a 16-5 FSC lead. Sammy Gorrasi tallied her first collegiate point as she assisted on Molly Berend's goal with one-minute remaining. The Mocs closed out the game with an Abby Joselyn goal assisted by freshman Sam O'Neill.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Florida Southern improved to 4-0 all-time against Young Harris. The Mocs have two wins in Lakeland and two wins at Young Harris.
- Florida Southern won 15 of 24 draw controls.
Each team picked up 20 ground balls. The Mocs were 15-for-17 on clear attempts as the Mountain Lions were 13-for-19.
- The Mocs fired off 34 shots to 16 by Young Harris. Florida Southern caused 11 of the Mountain Lions 19 turnovers.
- Both Tare and Savaglio recorded their first collegiate goal. Sydney O'Neill made a save in her collegiate debut in goal for the Mocs.

Florida Southern will conclude its two-game road stand with a neutral site game against the University of Indianapolis on Sunday, February 16 at 12 p.m. The Mocs will open up the home portion of their schedule when they welcome No. 1 Adelphi University to Moccasin Field on February 20 for a 7 p.m. opening draw.
