Box Score BELMONT, N.C. – The Florida Southern College men's lacrosse rallied in the fourth quarter but that was not enough as they fell at Belmont Abbey, 12-10 on Saturday. Sophomore Jeff Atlas paced the Mocs as he recorded four points on the day, three goals and one assist. Both Carson Wallace and Sean Nolan recorded a pair of goals each in the loss. Florida Southern is now 1-1 on the season as Belmont Abbey improves to 3-0 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Quarter | Atlas put the Mocs up 1-0 in the first five minutes of the game off a feed from Joe Appio. Belmont Abbey responded with a man-up goal to notch the score at 1-1. Atlas would feed Nolan a pass that he would slot right past the Crusaders goalie for a 2-1 Moccasin advantage. With 1:37 remaining in the opening quarter the home team tied the game at 2-2.
- 2nd Quarter | Florida Southern was denied a goal in the second quarter as Belmont Abbey was in the midst of a 7-0 run that spanned the first three-quarters of the game. The home team would score two even-strength goals, and a man up and man-down goal to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
- 3rd Quarter | After the Crusaders pushed the lead to 8-2, junior midfielder Justin Dunleavy ended the Mocs scoring drought as he was assisted by sophomore Ryan Gorecki. The Mocs would cut the home teams lead in half as Atlas put an unassisted man-up goal into the back of the net to make it 8-4 Belmont Abbey. Both teams would tack on another goal each in the final two minutes of the quarter for a 9-5 Crusaders lead.
- 4th Quarter | The Abbey would open the final quarter with its 10th goal of the game. The Mocs would respond to get back in the game as they used a 4-0 run to pull within one goal, 10-9. The home team would tack on a pair of late goals to push the lead out to three, 12-9. With less than 90 seconds remaining in the game, Carson Wallace put an unassisted shot past the Crusaders goalie for the 10th Moccasin goal. Belmont Abbey would win the game 12-10.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Southern continued to dominate at faceoff as junior Kevin Horwitz won 17 of 25 chances.
- In goal, Maxwell Freestone finished with five saves as he was in goal for all 60 minutes for the Mocs.
- In all, six different players scored for FSC. Southern out-shot Belmont Abbey 53-30.
Six of the Mocs 10 goals were assisted.
