Box Score TAMPA, Fla. - Florida Southern College baseball suffered its first conference loss of the years as it fell 10-1 to the University of Tampa on Friday night at the UT Baseball Field. The No. 5 Moccasins (8-3, 0-1 SSC) could not find a solution to strong pitching from the No. 7 Spartans (7-3, 1-0 SSC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Tampa threatened early by putting runners on second and third on two singles, but J.J. Niekro got the Mocs out of the inning with a strikeout and a flyout.
- The Spartans went up 1-0 in the second inning after McDonald, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a Flint sacrifice bunt.
- Jacob Teter tied the game at one in the third inning, singling down the right-field line to score Dylan Costa.
- Tampa went up 3-1 in the fourth inning, with the Spartans using two singles and a triple to score two runs with two outs in the frame.
- The lead increased to 4-1 in the sixth inning as Cadenas tripled to score Navarrete.
- Tampa went up 5-1 in the seventh as Rulli hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Benoit.
- The Moccasins threatened in the eighth as Teter and Zach Scott rattled off two-straight singles with two out, but a popout got the Spartans to the bottom of the inning.
- The floodgates opened for the home side in the bottom of the frame as it would score five runs on three hits and three walks. A walk and two singles loaded the bases, with another walk and a sacrifice fly each scoring a run. An error loaded the bases and another walk scored the third run of the inning. A hit up the middle scored two more, with Reed Burke getting the Mocs out of the inning on a popout.
- Maglich walked with one out in the top of the ninth but two strikeouts ended the game in favor of the Spartans, 10-1. Knarr improved to 3-1 on the year while Niekro moved to 3-1 as well.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Teter went 2-for-4 on the night, extending his hit streak to seven-straight games. In that span, he has tallied two hits three times.
- Scott also extended his hit streak to seven-straight games. The senior is now 11-for-26 in his last seven games, with four runs and six RBI.
- Alan Burnsed is now tied-third in the country after getting hit by a pitch for seventh time this season.
- Knarr struck out 15 batters as the Spartans fanned a total of 20 Moccasin batters.
