Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Tampa

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TAMPA, Fla. - Florida Southern College baseball split a doubleheader against the University of Tampa on Saturday, winning 5-3 in game one but falling 11-1 in game two at the UT Baseball Field. The No. 5 Moccasins (9-4, 1-2 SSC) hit four homers on the day against the No. 7 Spartans (8-4, 2-1 SSC).

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:

  • Tampa went up early, scoring a run in the bottom of the first as Drew Ehrhard came home on a Dan Sullivan double.
  • Alan Burnsed and Christian Maglich hit back-to-back homers for the second time this year, putting the Mocs up 2-1 in the second inning.
  • The Moccasins put up another run in the fifth inning as Vaun Brown scored on a Dylan Costa double. Tampa tied the game in the bottom of the inning, tallying up two runs on a Sullivan single with two out and the bases loaded. Josh Rulli walked to load the bases again, but a flyout to left stopped the bleeding.
  • Brown homered to lead off the seventh inning to give his side the lead, and the Mocs threatened more with the bases loaded and one out. Zach Scott hit into a double play that got the Spartans out of the inning.
  • Burnsed launched his second long ball of the game in the eighth to put the Mocs up, 5-3.
  • Tampa threatened to blow the game open in the ninth inning, as two singles and a walk loaded the bases with two out. Thomas Spinelli struck out John Pitchman to halt the Spartans and give the Moccasins a 5-3 game one win.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:

  • Jose Cadenas homered to start the first inning for the Spartans, putting them up 1-0. The Mocs responded in the second inning as Brown singled to right to score Scott. Southern had an additional runner at third, but Cody Duke popped out to end the top frame.
  • The Spartans went up 5-1 in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs on three hits. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, with a walk and two passed balls scoring three runs. Nick Derr singled to score Mauro Conde, while Cadenas was thrown out at home to end the rally.
  • A Costa single and Scott and Zach Diewert walks loaded the bases for the Mocs, but Burnsed struck out swinging in the top of the third.
  • UT earned five more runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two out, a walk and a single put runners on first and second for two singles that each score a runner. A passed ball scored one more, while an Ehrhard triple cleared the baserunners. A Derr strikeout ended the inning, with the Spartans leading 10-1.
  • Tampa added one more in the eighth, as McDonald singled up the middle to score Hunt who had doubled to start the inning. The Spartans would hold on to win, 11-1. Chase Pilato was given the loss while Jordan Leasure earned his second win of the year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Moccasins still lead the all-time series against the Spartans, 113-104.
  • Burnsed hit two homers in the first game of the doubleheader, the second time he has gone yard twice in a game this season. The senior previously went long twice against Lincoln Memorial last Friday at Henley Field.
