Women's Tennis Defeats Panthers

ORLANDO, Fla. - Florida Southern College women's tennis got back into the win column on Tuesday afternoon, winning 6-1 over Davenport at the USTA National Center. The No. 18 Moccasins (2-4) gave up only one set in singles to the Panthers (2-16) as they cruised into a victory heading into their spring break trip.

"We had a tough doubles performance," head coach Trish Riddell said. "But we came back strong in singles."

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Isabella Bolivar and Lola Asis cruised 6-0 in the third doubles flight, but the other pairings saw tough competition in flights one and two. Flor Salerno and Minnie Kim fell just short at 6-4 in the No. 1 flight while Magda Stepnik and Mathilda Vidgren dropped a close, 7-5 decision in the No. 2 flight.
  • The Moccasins returned the favor to the Panthers in singles play, as all flights were won by Southern. Stepnik was up 4-2 before winning by retirement in the No. 4 flight while Vidgren dominated in the No. 6 flight with two 6-0 sets.
  • Asis earned two 6-2 sets in the No. 5 flight and Kim clinched the match for the Mocs with a 6-3, 6-0 performance in the No. 3 flight.
  • The Moccasins executed on the six-point swing with Salerno winning two 6-4 sets in the No. 2 flight while Laura Vetter dominated 6-0 in her first set before coming back from a 5-7 second set with a 10-6 tiebreaker to take the No. 1 flight.
