Baseball Launches Five Homers in 10-9 Loss to Cougars

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Florida Southern College baseball scored seven-straight runs but could not stop a Columbus State comeback as it fell 10-9 on Sunday afternoon at Burger King Stadium. The No. 30 Moccasins (5-2) hit five home runs in the game but could not stop a potent Cougars (5-1) offense that brought in eight runs in two innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Moccasins went up 3-0 early in the second inning as Zach Diewert hit his fourth home run of the year and Tor Sehnert launched a two-run homer in his first at-bat as a Moccasin.
  • The 3-0 Moccasin lead increased to 7-0 in the fourth inning as nine batters had plate appearances. Vaun Brown was hit by a pitch and Santino Miozzi singled to right field to advance Brown to third. A Dylan Costa sac fly scored Brown and a Kyler Marquis home run made the score 6-0. Teter hit his second home run in three days to right field to put the Mocs up 7-0.
  • Columbus State scored two runs in the bottom of the inning after Meadows scored on a wild pitch and a Webb sac fly scored Brooks.
  • Brown hit his second home run in two days in the top of the fifth, scoring Sehnert who led-off the inning with a single.
  • The Cougars mounted their comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning with the scoreboard reading 9-2 in favor of the Mocs. A single and hit by pitch put runners on first and second, with both scoring on a double from Bullock. Two singles loaded the bases, with a hit from Kirley to right center scoring two more runs. Two walks brought in one more and a Horne sac fly scored the final run of the inning as the Cougars came within one run at 9-8.
  • CSU completed the comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning as Wilbanks hit a two-run homer to right field that gave the Cougars a 10-9 lead.
  • The Moccasins would put a runner on first with one out in the ninth but a double play ended the game. Ryan Langford was given the loss and Noah Windhorst earned the win for Columbus State.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Mocs hit five home runs for the first time since March 26, 2016, when Logan Browning, Sam Machonis, Mitch Reeves, David Lugo and Kevin Fuller all hit long balls against Eckerd in a 13-4 win.
  • Brown started the season 0-for-9, but this week had a hot bat, going 7-for-16 in four games against Eckerd (1) and Columbus State (3). In four games he tallied two HRs, 3 RBI and a stolen base, hitting .438 with an .813 slugging percentage. Today's game saw Brown go 3-for-3, with a HR, two runs, and two RBI.
  • Both teams combined for 26 hits as the Mocs tied their season-high of 12 set on Friday against the Cougars.
