Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 7 Florida Southern College women's lacrosse team dropped a tough 15-14 decision to visiting No. 5 Queens (N.C.) University on Monday afternoon, at Moccasin Field. The Royals (4-0) used a 5-1 run late in the second half to beat the host Mocs (3-3).
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Half
- The Mocs jumped out early lead for the second time in as many games, scoring 1:02 in, on a goal from senior attack Grace Glinecki. Moments later, classmate Riley Bannatyne made the score 2-0, on a free position shot.
- Queens responded with a 3-0 run over the next three minutes, taking a 3-2 lead.
- From there, the Mocs exploded for six consecutive goals, highlighted by a behind-the-back pass from senior attack Julia Couch to sophomore Brenna Smith for Southern's fifth goal of the game.
- Queens would get one back with 21 seconds left in the half, making the score FSC 8, Queens 4.
2nd half
- The Royals scored the first two goal of the second half to cut the deficit to 8-6. From there, senior attack Sarah Grady scored two straight goals to extend the lead back to four, 10-6.
- Queens responded with four consecutive tallies, knotting the score at 10-10.
- Smith and Bannatyne put Southern up 12-10, with 12:39 to play.
- A 5-1 run for the Royals allowed the guests to take a commanding lead at 15-13.
- Smith scored as time expired, making the final score 15-14, in favor of Queens.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Today marked the first ever victory for Queens over Florida Southern. The all-time record now stands at 8-1 in favor of Florida Southern.
- Smith scored six goals today, leading all players. Grady added four goals, with Bannatyne adding two. Senior midfielder Catherine DeKorte and Glinecki added one goal apiece.
- Couch had three of Southern's four assists on the day. Bannatyne had the other.
- Sophomore goalie Patricia Werker started the game and made four saves, before senior Alanna Zambetti came in in relief to make two saves.
- Statistically, the game was very even. Each team had 27 shots, and each team made six saves. FSC had 23 turnovers, while Queens had 22. The one glaring difference was in ground balls, where Southern led 27-15.
