LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College men's tennis continued its unbeaten run on Wednesday afternoon at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center, defeating Grand Valley State University, 6-1. The No. 18 Moccasins (6-1) have now won five-in-a-row after today's victory over the Lakers (5-3).
"I thought they played a solid match against a solid team today," head coach Greg Van Emburgh said. "It was great to see Tim back in the lineup."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Moccasins found their footing early as Tim Becker and Brian Pham won 6-3 in the No. 3 flight, matched by another 6-3 win for the Mocs in the No. 1 flight by Andres Cabezas and Erik Nordblom. Pablo Salamanca and Valentin Hertweck completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 showing in the No. 2 flight.
- Hertweck kicked singles action off with a 6-1, 6-3 showing in the No. 2 flight. Miroslav Cvjetan followed closely behind with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory in the No. 6 flight.
- Southern clinched the match after Nordblom won 6-2, 7-6 with a 7-3 tiebreaker in the No. 1 flight. Cabezas made it 5-0 Southern after winning the No. 3 flight, 6-4, 6-2.
- Two three-set contests remained in the match. Both Oscar Sohl and Chase Martin lost their first sets 6-4 before bouncing back with 6-2 second sets. Sohl earned the better of his opponent with a 6-3 third-set victory in the No. 4 flight while Martin fell in a heartbreaking 5-7 decision in the No. 5 flight.

Southern will continue its homestand as it hosts Daemen on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Southern New Hampshire at 12 p.m. on Sunday. All matches will be at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
