FSC Basketball Alum Kevin Capers '15 to Compete in TBT on ESPN

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Florida Southern College will once again be represented in The Basketball Tournament, a winner-take-all, $1 million, summer basketball event broadcast live on ESPN networks. FSC men's basketball alumnus Kevin Capers will compete as a member of D2, a team that has had success in previous years.

The ten-day event begins on July 4, with the championship game played on July 14.

This year's edition of TBT features only 24 teams, instead of the traditional 64, and the entire event will be played in the Nationwide Arena. The prize money is cut in half for this year, at $1 million. All teams will undergo multiple levels of testing for COVID-19 before being allowed to play in this year's TBT, which is in its seventh year. All games will feature the Elam Ending, the end-of-game format made famous during the 2020 NBA All-Star Game, that eliminates the game clock after a certain point and features teams playing to a Target Score.

"Kevin is a fantastic scorer and facilitator, plus a proven winner," said Grant M. Leonard, the GM and Head Coach of D2. "His size, length, athleticism, and position flexibility, plus his experience playing professionally in a bunch of leagues, will make him a huge addition to our team this year."

Capers graduated from Florida Southern in 2015, after winning the NCAA Division II National Championship. He finished his career with 2,319 total points scored, the second highest total in Florida Southern College history. He remains one of only 14 First Team All-Americans.

No. 24 D2 opens TBT, literally, in Game One of Round One, facing No. 9 Big X, a team comprised primarily of former Big Ten conference players, on Saturday, July 4, at 3:00 p.m., on ESPN.
