WINTER PARK, Fl. – Sophomore
Olivia Bryant led the Florida Southern College women's tennis team in singles competition as the Moccasins competed in the Varner Invitational at Rollins College this weekend.
The tournament featured five women's teams from Nova Southeastern, Eastern Florida Southern College, Florida Southern, Rollins, and Eckerd. The team singles and doubles were divided into draws and competed in their selected group for the tournament.
Bryant led the Mocassins in singles competition with back-to-back match wins against Celia Montero of Nova Southeastern and Maria McKay of Rollins. Bryant played Eva Goncharov from Nova Southeastern for the stage championship. Bryant won the second set to force a tie-breaking third set, but Goncharov came out with the win as Bryant finished in second place in the draw.
Mathilda Vidgren dropped her first match against Georgina Groth of Rollins, but took down Kylie Misdorp of Eckered in a tie-breaking third set.
Flor Salerno also lost her first match, but was able to come back and defeat Ericka Chavarria from Eckerd. Salerno finished in fifth place after a third set win over Luisa Renovales. After splitting sets,
Karyna Bazilevych was narrowed out by Caitlynn Khan in the opening match in a nail-biting third set, however, won her next match against Julia Triska from Eckerd in a dominating two sets.
Eve Robinson and
Isabella Bolivar also competed in singles competition. Bolivar faced Vidgren in the final stage of their draw, with Bolivar taking the fifth place singles finish in the unplayed match.
In doubles competition, the Mocs had three pairs represented. Vidgren and Salerno dropped their first match, before they got the win against Greco and Renovales of Eastern Florida Southern College. In the fifth place match, Vidgren and Salerno beat Misdorp and Chavarria of Eckerd to earn fifth place int eh draw. Robinson and Bolivar were unable to get the win in their first match. Bryant teamed up with Bazilevych in a tie-breaker loss in their first match against Montero and Goncharov of Nova Southeastern. However, they beat Reichert and Triska from Eckerd in the next match 6-0. In a fifth place title match, Bryant and Bazilevych faced familiar faces in Bolivar and Robinson. The match came down to final points as Bolivar and Robinson came out with the fifth place finish.
