LAKELAND, Fl -- The Florida Southern Men's Soccer Team won their second straight game for the first time this season against Barry University by the score of 3-1.
The Mocs looked to score early as in the fourth minute, the Mocs drew a corner taken by Luca Bernoth that was curled to the top corner before being punched out by the Barry goalkeeper. Then the Mocs had a second chance in the fifth minute on another Bernoth corner that was headed wide. For most of the half, Florida Southern (3-6-3, 2-4-1) and Barry University (4-7-1, 3-3-0) were playing in the midfield with possession being slightly in favor of the Mocs to end the first half. Though the Mocs owned possession the half still ended 0-0.Â
The second half of action was a different story for both teams. The Mocs came out firing with more pressure and speed in the second half and broke the tie in the 53rd minute on a beautiful through ball by Leoluca Diefenbach to Christoph Gums who put the ball in the back of the net. In the 61st minute, Bernoth took a great shot that hit the left woodwork. After a scramble in the box, Mocs top goalscorer James Meehan would put the mocs up 2-0 on a brilliant 1-on-1 finish against the Barry keeper. The mocs would add another on a Edu Capote goal in the 69th minute to put the Mocs up 3-0. Barry would answer back quickly as in the 70th minute, Timmy Nicholson put a ball past Mocs goalie Mars Gohier. The Mocs would hold on through the end of the match and won the game by a final of 3-1.Â
How It Happened:
- Buccaneers out shot the Mocs 12-10 but Mocs dominated the corners 4-1
- Gums earned his 2nd goal of the season in the 53rd minute, Diefenbach added to his team lead in assist with his 4th on the season
- Meehan added to his team leading goals with his 5th of the season in the 62nd Minute
- Capote made it 3-0 on his 2nd goal of the season in the 69th minute
- Barry would answer in the 70th minute to make it 3-1
- Gohier would save 5 of 6 shots faced, including 4 in the first half
