ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Florida Southern women's soccer team lost 2-0 against Eckerd College in a conference matchup Wednesday night.
Both teams were even at halftime with two shots on goal each. Florida Southern (4-7-2, 1-4-2) traded shots with the Tritons in the first half, with saves by both goalies to stay tied. However, Eckerd (5-6-1, 3-5-0) was first to score two minutes into the second half off a goal by Aisling Spillane. Despite an offensive push by the Mocs, the Tritons scored again from a Hajar Benjoud free kick with 15 minutes left. Florida Southern continued to tally shots, but Eckerd hung on in the 2-0 final.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Caitlyn Lowery started the game with a shot on goal, followed by Tatum Albrecht in the first half
- Each goalie had two saves in the first half
- Eckerd started the second half with a goal by Spillane to go up 1-0
- Albrecht earned a free kick just outside the box halfway through the second half, but Eckerd keeper Cadence Talbert made the save
- A Tritons free kick outside the box led to a Benjoud goal, leading 2-0 with 15 minutes left
- With six minutes left, Meghan Kriney headed the ball from a free kick, but Talbert made the save
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Eckerd narrowly held the advantage in shots (11-to-10) and in corner kicks (6-to-5)
- Albrecht and Lowery each had three shots, with Albrecht tallying two shots on goal
- Amy Volk and Cali Larson added shots, and Kriney had two shots on goal
- Keeper Jenny Staten finished with four saves, with Grace Stec entering for minutes
