LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team were unable to rally in a 1-0 loss to #23 Embry-Riddle Wednesday night.
Florida Southern (4-8-2, 1-5-2) fended off most of the Eagles shot attempts, but unable to score themselves. Embry-Riddle (8-3-2, 6-2-1) scored early in the 13
th minute off a corner kick by Sofia Munthe Nilsson that found Hattie Kettle with a one bounce score. A strong defensive stand by the Mocs kept the game within reach, but Embry-Riddle hung on.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- An early shot by Caitlyn Lowery was out wide, and stayed the only shot of the first half
- A corner kick by the Eagles had one bounce, with Kettle to score in the 13th minute
- Mocs goalkeeper Jenny Staten had five saves in the game, three in the first half
- Halfway through the second half, the Mocs continued to stay within reach, but no shots
- With just over five minutes left in the game, great offensive passing led to a shot on goal by Claire Duree but Eagles keeper Oona Jokinen made the save
- The Eagles made it difficult for the Mocs to find get the ball in the attacking zone, as Embry-Riddle sealed the win
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Staten had five saves in the game, to bring her season total to 73 saves
- Duree had the sole shot on goal for the team late in the game nearly tying the game
- The Eagles had the advantage in shots (16-to-2) and had nine corner kicks to the Mocs zero
