WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The women's volleyball team lost in a 3-1 battle against Auburn University Montgomery Friday afternoon. The Mocs are participating in a Sunshine State Conference and Gulf South Conference Regional Crossover tournament this weekend, facing AUM, West Florida, and Valdosta State.
Florida Southern (9-7, 6-5) took set one in a 28-26 tie-breaker battle, but unable to continue with AUM winning the next three sets. SSC Offensive Player of the Week earlier this month,
Mackenzie Petermann led with 11 kills in the four sets. AUM (15-8, 6-3) had Giada Pais-Marden lead her team with 16 kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set: Florida Southern 28, AUM 16
After down by three late in the first set, the Mocs had a four point rally to stay even with AUM toward the end. Two kills by Petermann led to a one point advantage, with a service error by AUM sealing the first set win.
Second Set: AUM 25, Florida Southern 19
AUM led with a 5-0 start, which the Mocs were unable to get ahold of the lead. Despite having a match-high 11 kills in the set, AUM evened the match 1-1.
Third Set: AUM 25, Florida Southern 15
Another slow start for the Mocs made it difficult to keep up from an attack spree by AUM. Florida Southern had a 4-0 rally to get within five of AUM, but the Warhawks held on.
Fourth Set: AUM 25, Florida Southern 25, 23
Despite being down 6-0 to start, the Mocs tallied multiple 4-0 rallies to stay in the set. With eight kills in the set, Florida Southern capitalized on the 10 errors by AUM in the fourth set to tie the set 22-22 late. The Warhawks won two straight points, with a kill by
