Women's Soccer Win 2 OT Thriller on Senior Night

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College women's soccer won a 2-1 double overtime thriller against the Saint Leo Lions in the inaugural game on the newly dedicated Berend Field. As the last home game of the season, the Mocs had a pregame ceremony celebrating the 11 Moc seniors.

Florida Southern (5-8-2, 2-5-2) scored in the first half and managed to keep the Lions at bay for most of the second half. Saint Leo (2-12-2, 1-8-1) evened the score with 15 minutes left in the second half to send the game into overtime. With five seconds left in the second overtime period, a miscue from the Lions led to the Mocs victory on senior day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mocs had a great two-on-one situation after a takeaway by Haley Thomassy allowed a pass to an open Elena Brkic for the right foot goal 22 minutes into the game
  • Both teams battled back and forth with a diving save by Mocs keeper Jenny Staten in the 27th minute to keep the Mocs up by one
  • In the second half, the Lions had a free kick opportunity by Bella Arato from deep and was sent just over Staten's hands to even the score in the 76th minute
  • Florida Southern had a shot on goal by Claire Duree in the first overtime, but the Lions made the save
  • With 5.3 seconds left on the clock, Duree crossed the ball into the box, but the Lions defender got a foot on the ball, deflecting it over the goalkeeper for an own goal and Mocs 2 OT win

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Mocs outshot the Lions 19-to-15 and held a slight advantage in corner kicks (5-to-4)
  • Staten finished the game with four saves on the night
  • Nine Mocs had at least one shot in the night, with Tatum Albrecht leading the way with four
  • With eight shots on goal, the Lions keeper had seven saves
  • Amy Volk had two shots on goal to match two on goal by Duree
