Mocs Volleyball Take Down Barry In Four-Set Conference Matchup

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Florida Southern College volleyball team won their third game in a row to beat Barry University on the road in Miami Shores Friday night.

The Mocs dropped set one but stayed focused to win three straight sets for the win. Florida Southern (12-8, 8-5) won their second game against conference opponents as Barry (12-8, 5-8) was unable to keep up against the Mocs in sets two through four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st Set | The Mocs were initially down 6-2 to start the set but were able to cut the deficit within one point late in the set. However, Barry held on to win the set 25-23.
  • Florida Southern had 14 kills in the set, compared to 17 by Barry.
  • Service errors by Barry along with kills by Mackenzie Petermann and Emily Crescenzi kept the game close, but the Buccaneers sealed the set win after three set point opportunities.

2nd Set | Florida Southern rebounded with a big set two win, fending off a late Barry rally in a tie-breaking set point clash.
  • A 5-0 lead by the Mocs allowed some breathing room as Barry struggled to stay within reach. Barry rallied to take the lead as the teams battled to a tie-breaking set point.
  • After a FSC timeout, kills by Tierra Porter and Ali Travis prevented the Barry set win, which led to a back-and-forth battle for the necessary two-point advantage and set win.
  • Tied at 26, Petermann and Porter had clutch kills to win the set and tie the game.

3rd Set | Another big lead to start the set continued for the Mocs to go up 2-1 in the game.
  • Although Barry had the first point in set three, Florida Southern did not lose the lead for the rest of the set in a pivotal set three win.
  • Florida Southern had a 9-1 run halfway through the set to get a big 22-13 lead over the Buccaneers. Porter, Travis, and Petermann led with kills during the set.
  • Another late rally by the Buccaneers came short, as the Mocs win 25-21.

4th Set | The momentum carried for the Mocs to stay consistent for the four-set win.
  • Both teams traded points for most of the set, but the Mocs was not behind once to stay in control.
  • Emma Shaddix and Jana Gilic joined in on the kills in set four for a consistent round.
  • Back-to-back aces by Erica Ronda set up a 23-19 lead, but Barry responded with two points of their own narrowing the deficit.
  • Porter nailed the kill for the match point as FSC wins three straight sets to take down Barry.
