Women's Tennis Compete at Mercer Gridiron Classic

MACON, Ga. – The Florida Southern College women's tennis team competed in the 2021 Mercer Gridiron Classic October 1-3 at the Randy Stephens Tennis Center in Macon, Georgia.

The Moccasins sent six players to compete and performed well against the 16 teams, which included a host of Division I teams such as Mercer, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, and Troy. Each team divided players into flights, which the winners would continue on to different draw stages.

In singles, Laura Vetter split the first two sets against Angel Carney before falling in third set. Vetter dropped her next two matches. Minnie Kim battled through three different opponents to make it to a draw stage semifinal before Andrea Widing took the stage. Freshman Maxima Ellenberg lost her first set, but would go on and sweep her next two opponents to be named stage winner.

Newcomer Vivien Charvatova lost her first match before advancing to her stage finals losing to Ella Tuomela of Jacksonville State. Sophomore Olivia Bryant competed hard but fell in three sets in her first match of the tournament. However, she won her stage final by sweeping Nicole Katzarkov of SCAD. Kelly Klaren added a stage final appearance after going 1-3 over the weekend.

For doubles, Vetter and Ellenberg teamed up to take on four pairings but unable to come out with a match win. Kim and Charvatova lost their first match, but won their next two matches to compete in their stage final, where they lost to Kennesaw State's Kim and Pinedo. Finally, Bryant and Klaren went 1-2 in doubles competition winning against Georgia College 6-0.
