TAMPA, FLA. – The Florida Southern College men's soccer program started out with a 1-0 lead but could not keep the momentum up as the Mocs fell to No. 23 University of Tampa 2-1 on Wednesday night. Southern falls to 1-6-3 overall and 1-4-1 in the Sunshine State Conference while the Spartans improve to 8-2-0 overall and 5-1-0 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a fairly quiet game between both teams until the 20th minute of play when both teams had back-to-back attacking opportunities. The Spartans attacked first but keeper Mars Gohier was there to make the save and leave it scoreless.
- Two minutes later at the 22:05 mark Tampa was called for a penalty in the box setting up Southern for a penalty kick.
- James Meehan scored his third goal of the season, putting the Mocs up 1-0 off of the penalty.
- Florida Southern continued to put the pressure on the Spartans defense but the score remained 1-0 going into halftime.
- Both teams had a chance during the 70th minute as each team took a corner but nothing was able to fall in until the 74:36 minute.
- The Spartans tied the game during the 74th minute as Travis Foster put the first goal on the board for Tampa making it 1-1.
- With under 10 minutes to play in regulation Tampa turned on the heat scoring to take a 2-1 win over the Mocs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Mocs took just three shots, all three coming in during the first half as Meehan had two and Luca Bernoth had the other for the Mocs on the night.
- Tampa outshot the Mocs 22 to 3 with 12 coming in the first half and 10 in the second.
- FSC recorded three yellow cards and one red in an extremely physical match as Meehan, Ivan Manfredi, and Santiago Erazo collected the yellows and Julian Jordan-Canosa is coming home with the red.
- Gohier held strong until the 74th minute, also holding down the defense with five saves on the night.

The Mocs return home on Saturday after a long tenor on the road. Southern will play host to Florida Tech for another Sunshine State Conference battle. FSC will kick off against the Panthers at 7:00 p.m.
