CLEVELAND, TENN. – Florida Southern College women's basketball fell to Lee, 44-63, in the first game of the GSC/SSC Challenge to open up their 2021-22 season on Friday at Paul Dana Walker Arena at Lee University. Lee University received votes in the WBCA NCAA Division II Preseason Coaches Poll.
The Moccasins (0-1) converted on just 25.4% of their field goals and 13.0% from the three point line, while being held to single digits in both quarters of the first half of the game as the Flames (1-0) picked up their first win of the season. Whitney Jacob led the Moccasins with 11 points in her first game as a Moc, while Lee had two players finish in double figures in the win.

Jacob started off the scoring for the Mocs with a 3-pointer giving them their only lead of the game.

The Mocs would then go down by five, as Lee put up four unanswered field goals.

Sanya Ratnikava would be the first to answer for the Mocs with 3:32 left in the first quarter. The junior's layup would shorten Lee's lead back to three.

Lee would score in the final 36 seconds of the quarter to make the score 5-12 at the end of the first.

Lee opened up the scoring for the quarter with a jump shot from Haley Schubert, followed by a three pointer from Julia Duncan.

The Mocs began their scoring for the quarter with a big three pointer by freshman Arriyanna Bracero with 3:28 left in the quarter.

Freshman Marissa Jenike added to the Mocs score with a jump shot in the paint.

Lee missed both free throws in the final 10 seconds of the quarter, while the Mocs ended the half trailing by 19 with a score of 10-29.

The Mocs started the second half with a layup from Arielle Dabu assisted by Mackenzie Steele.

Jacob and Bracero added to the Moccasin run with a pair of layups, bringing the Mocs within 15.

Steele put up her first three pointer of the season, breaking 20 points for the Moccasins.

Jenike scores another jump shot, as the Mocs begin to close the Flames lead gap.

Dabu made both free throws at the 1:27 mark of the third quarter.

A steal by Dabu late in the quarter created a scoring opportunity for the Mocs, as Paula Real scored for the Mocs with a dunk.

Dabu made two more free throws with six seconds left to end the quarter 28-41.

Dabu opened up the final quarter with two more free throws, making her 5-for-6 on free throws for the night

Jenike collected a rebound to convert for another two points for the Mocs as she was fouled on the shot. The freshman would make the free throw to bring the Mocs within 11.

With 2:38 in the quarter, Jacob put up two free throw points, finishing the game with 11 total points.

Jenike was fouled on a layup and put on the free throw line. The Cincinnati native scored both free throws.

Despite the Mocs second half effort, they could not answer back as the final score of the game was 44-63.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Florida Southern fell to 5-4 all-time against Lee.

From the field, the Mocs shot 25.4% going 15-for-59. From beyond the arc, FSC shot 13.0% going 3-of-23.

The Mocs finished the game with a score only one point ahead of the last time they faced the Flames (43-55, on November 9, 2019).

Florida Southern's bench outscored Lee's reserves 20-16, but the Flames outscored the Mocs in second chance points 17-7.
