Women's Basketball Defeats Florida Tech 81-62 Earning First SSC Win

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Florida Southern College's women's basketball earned their first Sunshine State Conference win as the Mocs defeated Florida Tech 81-62 on the road. The Mocs were led by Whitney Jacob scoring 19 points, going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. 
 
"We played the way I know that we are capable of playing," said head coach Betsy Harris. "It was nice to see us make shots as we have struggled with that. I thought our second five came in and gave us the spark that we needed. Proud of how hard they played and glad we could be rewarded with the win."
 
Florida Southern improves to 2-4 overall and moves to 1-1 in the Sunshine State, while Florida Tech falls to 1-6 on the year and 0-2 in the conference.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter
  • Sara Wohlgemuth starts things off for FSC after missing a three but fouled on a rebound that sent her to the line after a foul making both shots for an early 2-0 lead. 
  • The Panthers went on a run hitting back-to-back threes to take the led at 6-2, but Julia Jenike hit a shot beyond the arc to make it 6-5 with 7:12 left in the quarter.
  • Freshman Madlena Gerke comes in hitting a three-pointer; tying the game at 8 - all. 
  • With Gerke hot off the bench, the Latvia native took the lead for the Mocs with another three with just under five minutes left and shortly after battled the Panthers defense to make a layup and make it 13-8. 
  • The Mocs continued with an 11-0 run, with a Mackenzie Steele three-pointer to make it 16-8 with 2:11 on the clock. 
  • The shots continued to fall for FSC, as Marissa Jenike made her first shot of the night with a three to make it 19-8. 
  • It continued to rain three-pointers for the Mocs as Paula Real hit a three of her own to finish the first quarter with a 22-13 lead over the Panthers. 
2nd Quarter
  • Whitney Jacobs started the second quarter off for the Mocs with a layup to keep the Mocs lead up by nine for a 24-15 score. 
  • Julia Jenike and Wohlgemuth went on a scoring-run with back-to-back layups giving the Mocs back a double-digit lead at 28-18 with 5:56 remaining in the half. 
  • Marte Moe hit a jumper to give FSC the biggest lead of the contest this far with an assist from Gerke to make it 32-18, a 14- point lead. 
  • Julia Jenike kept the Mocs out of reach for the Panthers in the first half as the senior made a layup with an assist from Aubrey Burke to make it 36-24. 
  • The Cincinnati native, Julia Jenike increased the Mocs lead to 15 before Wohlgemuth made it an 18-point game with a layup to finish the half with a 44-26 lead for the Mocs.
3rd Quarter
  • Jacob's got FSC back in the third quarter, after starting off slower but a quick jumper and three from Marissa Jenike put the Mocs back up by 19-points. 
  • Gerke's shots continued to fall with a three-point jumper to make it the biggest lead for the Mocs before she hit all her free throws making it 54-32 with 6:47 on the clock. 
  • Southern's offensive let up a little by not scoring again until the 3:09 mark as Jacob hit a layup but Florida Tech cut the Mocs lead down to 14-points.
  • FSC was able to get back up to an 18-point lead as freshmen, Real, and Jenike both hit a jumper and layup to make it 60-42 with just under two minutes left in the quarter. 
  • Steele was fouled sending her to the line making both her shots as the Mocs went back up by 20-points.
  • Julia Jenike hit a third three of the contest to bring the Mocs back up to 21-points with 18 seconds left in the quarter. 
 
4th Quarter
  • Shots continued to fall for the Mocs as Jacob hit two consecutive threes to put the Mocs up by 24. 
  • Another shot by Jacob, this time a jumper from outside the paint, gave FSC a 75-50 lead with 6:30 left in regulation. 
  • The transfer, Jacob's owned the final quarter hitting another three to make it a 78-53 contest giving the Mocs a 28-point lead. 
  • Chyna Bullen hit a layup and an and-one keeping the Mocs within 24-points as they make it 81-57 with two minutes left in play.
  • The Panthers were able to score five more; but the Mocs finish victorious with a 81-62 win on the road. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • In the first quarter, the Mocs went on a 14-0 run to take back the lead at 22-13. 
  • Gerke turned the game around hitting a shot beyond the arc giving the Mocs the momentum. 
  • FSC biggest lead was in the fourth quarter with a 28-point lead after Jacob's three. 
  • Julia Jenike led the Mocs in the first half with 10 points; followed by Wohlgemuth and Gerke with nine points apiece. 
  • From the paint, FSC shot 53.3%; the best in the first half this year for FSC.
  • FSC went 16-30 from the field; while Florida Tech went 8-23 in the first half. 
  • Defensively, eight Mocs have totaled two rebounds after two quarters. 
  • In the first half, Mocs led in second-chance points with seven to the Panthers one.
  • The bench scored more than half of the 44 points in the first half with 23 bench points.
  • Jacob finished with 19-points and six rebounds leading the Mocs in all categories. 
  • Gerke also dished out 14-points shooting 4-for-6 from the field and 3-for-4 from the arc. 
  • Julia Jenike finished the Mocs off in double-digits scoring 13 points.
  • Florida Southern shot 50.0 percent from the field and 48.3 percent from the three the team best thus far.
