Women's Basketball Falls On the Road at Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Florida Southern College women's basketball fell on the road as the Mocs were defeated by Sunshine State Conference opponent Lynn University 75-43 on Saturday at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center in Boca Raton.  
 
"Lynn out played us and out hustled us", said head coach Betsy Harris. "I'm disappointed in how we lost, but we just have to learn and grow from this."
 
Florida Southern falls to 4-4 overall and moves to 2-2 in the Sunshine State, while Lynn moves to 3-5 on the year collecting their first win in the conference for a 1-3 record. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter
  • Maddy Morales sank a 3-pointer from the right corner to start the Mocs off for the first basket of the game, but Lynn had the advantage with a 5-3 lead. 
  • Julia Jenike hit a three of her own to bring the Mocs up, followed by a layup from Whitney Jacob to make it an 11-8 game with the Knights on top. 
  • Jacob went to the line after a charge hitting the free throw to make it 19-11 with 2:14 left in the quarter. 
  • Mackenzie Steele made a second-chance layup off a Lynn turnover to bring the Mocs within six points to end the first quarter of action. 
2nd Quarter
  • With an assist from Steele, Jacob at the net to hit a layup before Steele hit her first shot beyond the arc to make it a 21-18 game with just under eight minutes left in the half. 
  • Marissa Jenike battled through the Lynn defense to make a layup in the paint and cut the fighting knights lead down to 11-points with 4:22 remaining. 
  • Steele found the open Moc in Ashley Shell for the second time this quarter as Shell hit her first bucket of the game to bring Florida Southern within 11-points this time with a 33-22 score. 
  • Sara Wohlgemuth was fouled under the Mocs basket to send her to the line; the redshirt freshman made one of her shots to make it 12-point deference with 2:01 on the clock. 
  • Florida Southern continued to put the pressure on the Fighting Knights as Shell is fouled sending her to the line hitting both her baskets to close the first half to a 42-25 score. 
3rd Quarter
  • Lynn started off hot out of the half, but Wohlgemuth rallied to hit a second-chance jumper after an offensive rebound from Jacob giving her the assist to making it 45-27 at the seven-minute mark. 
  • Arriyana Bracero took to the net after getting the defensive rebound and hit a fast-break jumper to bring the Mocs within 19 points for a 48-29 gap with 2:27 on the clock. 
  • Marte Moe was fouled under the net sending the freshman to the line hitting one to make it 51-30 to end the quarter. 
 4th Quarter
  • Florida Southern attacked first to start the quarter with a jumper in the paint from Aubrey Burke, but Lynn answered back with a 3-pointer giving the Fighting Knights the biggest lead thus far with 22-points. 
  • Burke continued to be the only Moc to make things fall hitting a shot beyond the arc with 5:23 on the clock. 
  • Domenica Zamora took her chance at a three sinking her 3-pointer with 4:40 on the clock; before the Fighting Knights went on another rally to make it a 73-38 deficit. 
  • Shell set up Bracero as the freshman hit a three-point basket from the right corner; followed by a fast break jumper from Zamora as the Mocs try to go on a late rally with under a minute to play. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • No Moc scored in double-digits as they were led by Jacob with seven points.
  • FSC had four score five points in Bracero, Zamora, Steele, and Burke. 
  • Jacob led the Mocs on the defensive side as well coming down with six boards.  
  • The Mocs saw their best action in the fourth quarter shooting 42 percent from the field and 60 percent from beyond the arc.  
  • The Mocs had 38 of the 43 points coming off the bench 20 in the paint for FSC. 
 
UP NEXT
Florida Southern will take a step away from Sunshine State Conference action next week as they host the Christmas Classic. The Mocs are scheduled to face Rockhurst on December 17 and Davenport on December 18. Both games are set for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
