Jenike Scores 1,000th Point as Mocs Women's Basketball Rolls, 73-61

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Graduate student Julia Jenike became the 26th woman to score 1,000 points in the history of the Florida Southern College women's basketball program, as she led the Mocs to a 73-61 victory at Florida Tech on Thursday evening. The Mocs ae riding a three-game winning streak, and are 4-2 on the season. The Panthers drop to 3-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter
  • After Tech scored the game's first points, junior Ashley Shell hit back-to-back shots to put the Mocs up, 4-2.
  • An 8-0 run for Tech put the hosts up big, who eventually led 19-10, with 1:32 remaining in the first.
  • From there, Jenike made her first three pointer of the game, followed by a Mackenzie Steele jumper, and the Panthers took a 19-15 lead.
2nd Quarter
  • The Mocs would take the lead quickly, on a triple from senior Monet Burkett and a jumper from Jenike.
  • The teams traded buckets, with the score tied at 30 with 2:30 remaining before halftime.
  • Southern then closed out the quarter on an 8-0 run, on baskets from Jenike, freshman Maddy Morales, and Jenike again.
  • Jenike's final basket of the quarter, a three-pointer, put her over the 1,000 point mark for her career.
  • At the half, FSC led 38-30.
  • In the second quarter, the Mocs out-scored the Panthers, 23-11, as the Mocs shot 52.9% from the floor.
  • Jenike had 15 points in the second stanza alone.
3rd Quarter
  • The Mocs exploded out of the gate, scoring the first seven points of the quarter, to take a 15 point lead, 45-30.
  • FIT took a timeout, and scored to break the Florida Southern run.
  • However the Mocs were not finished.
  • Senior Marta Aranda would hit a three-pointer, pushing the lead to 18 points, 50-32.
  • A 10- run for the hosts would get them back in the game, even as the Mocs still led.
  • Jenike and Steele would score the last points of the third quarter, and the Mocs led, 58-47, with just ten minutes remaining.
4th Quarter
  • The Panthers opened the fourth quarter on a 12-1 run, to trim their deficit to just one point, 60-59, at the 5:56 mark.
  • Shell and Burkett would each knock down shots, and the lead was safe.
  • Tech would cut the score to 65-61, in favor of the Mocs, with 3:07 remaining.
  • Aranda would then hit a jumper, and the Mocs scored the final six points from the line, for the 73-61 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Jenike now has 1,007 career points, making her the 26th woman to eclipse that plateau in school history. She now sits just nine points from 25th place in scoring in school history, behind Allison Gerdeman '96.
  • For the game, Jenike led all scorers with 25 points, followed by Aranda with 14, and Steele with 11.
  • Shell and Steele each had eight rebounds.
  • Burkett had nine points and a team-high four assists.
  • The Mocs forced 15 Panther turnovers, converting them into 20 points.
UP NEXT
The Mocs will travel to face Barry University on Saturday, March 13, in the regular season finale. Southern will then enter the Sunshine State Conference Championships on March 16, heading to face Tampa at 5:00 p.m.
