Box Score SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Florida Southern baseball team fell to 4-2 on the season after dropping their non-conference game at Saint Leo by a final of 14-7. The Mocs scored in each of the first two innings but fell behind after the Lions scored six runs in the bottom of the third. FSC never regained the lead despite scoring multiple runs in the fourth and eighth innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mocs scored on the first pitch of the game as center fielder Vaun Brown hit a home run down the left field line on the first offering from Saint Leo starter Jared Beck.
- Saint Leo answered with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first.
- FSC tied things up at two, on an RBI ground out from senior Santino Miozzi in the top of the second.
- The Lions retook the lead in the third as they added five more runs off of starter Brant Brown, ending his evening after 2+ innings of work. Saint Leo tacked on an additional run off of Logan Verrino as ten Lions came to the plate in the third. FSC trailed 8-2 at the end of three.
- In the fourth, third baseman Zach Scott drove a ball to the right field wall, scoring Alan Burnsed as the Mocs began to chip away at the Lion lead. Miozzi would add his second RBI of the game, driving in Scott on a single to right, making it an 8-4 game.
- Saint Leo would add another run in the fifth, before opening the game up with five runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Lions would go up 14-4.
- Freshman Jeff Liquori made his collegiate debut on the mound for the Mocs in the seventh inning and pitched a scoreless frame.
- Transfer Nick Wells hit an RBI single in his first Mocs at bat, giving FSC their fifth run of the game.
- Shortstop Grady Maguire drove in the sixth FSC run on a single to left-center for his for collegiate hit. The Mocs plated three in the eighth and trailed 14-7 heading into their final at bat.
- Two Mocs reached base in the ninth but FSC was unable to complete the comeback.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Mocs fell to 22 and 22 against Saint Leo since the start of the 2009 season.
- The Mocs are now 11 and 13 at Saint Leo over that stretch.
- FSC added to their Sunshine State Conference leading home run total as the Mocs have hit 14 home runs in six games.
- Outfielder Tor Sehnert currently leads the conference in home runs with 5. Coming into play Wednesday, he also led the conference in slugging percentage (1.438) and is second in OBP (0.591)
- As of Wednesday, freshman Connor Berry leads the SSC in OBP (0.667)
UP NEXT
The team is back in action this weekend with a three-game series against the Rollins College Tars. The first game will take place Friday at Henley Field with a 5:00 p.m. first pitch. On Saturday the teams will compete in Winter Park at 3:00 before returning to Lakeland for the final game of the series on Sunday at 1:00.
