LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game series against the Lynn Fighting Knights, 8-7. With the loss, the Mocs move to 5-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play on the season. Despite a four-run bottom of the eighth, FSC was not able to overcome an early 5-0 deficit.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Fighting Knights opened up the scoring with two runs in the first and another three in the second off of Mocs starter Jeff Liquori.
- FSC got on the board as senior Tor Sehnert blasted his seventh home run of the season, tying him with teammate Vaun Brown for the conference lead.
- Lynn would add another run in the third, making it a 6-1 ball game.
- The Mocs would get one back in the fourth, as catcher Santino Miozzi hit an RBI single to left. Miozzi would total three hits in the game.
- Lynn added another run in both the fifth and seventh innings.
- Southern tacked on another run in the seventh inning as Brown came around to score his conference leading 17th run of the season.
- The Mocs had their best inning in the eighth, when they scored four runs on five hits. Left fielder Alan Burnsed was hit by a pitch to start the inning. DH Conner Berry would then rope a double for his first collegiate extra base hit, scoring Burnsed. Miozzi and Grady Maguire would both reach with base hits before Sehnert hit an RBI double, cutting the Lynn lead to just one run.
- Mike Pelaez and Pablo Taranzo combined to throw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief work, keeping the game close as they worked the eighth and ninth innings.
- The game would end in heartbreaking fashion as pinch runner Ahmad Fitts was picked off as he attempted to steal second base with two outs in the ninth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- With the loss, FSC falls to 5-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
- Brown has scored in every game for FSC this season.
- Miozzi and Maguire each had three hits for the Mocs.
- The Mocs have only made five total errors in 10 games as a defense.
