LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern women's soccer team opened up Sunshine State Conference (SSC) play Saturday night when Palm Beach Atlantic University came to town. The Mocs and Sailfish battled it out during the first half but it was PBA that took the momentum from the first half and pushed to take home the 2-0 victory.
This marks the first conference loss for the Moccasins in 2021 after starting the season with three consecutive wins. Florida Southern is now 3-3-0 on the season and 0-1 in the SSC while Palm Beach Atlantic moves to 4-1-0 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.
How It Happened
- Florida Southern had the game's first scoring chances as senior Caitlyn Lowery fired a shot in the first minutes of the match, that just missed and went inside the PBA keeper's hands.
- The Mocs put the pressure on the Sailfish as FSC recorded three shots and two corners during the first half of action.
- Just under two minutes into the second half FSC junior goalie Jenny Staten made her first save of the half to keep the score at 0-0.
- In the 54th minute, the Sailfish's Halie Reznik slotted a shot from above the box and found the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
- Before the Mocs could answer back PBA scored their second shot from a corner kick to put the Sailfish up 2-0 with under 30 minutes to play.
- The Moccasins countered with back-to-back shots by Lowery and Claire Duree in the 67th and 68th minute.
- In the final minutes the Mocs attacked and challenged PBA, but their defense stood tall denying the Mocs a successful chance to tie the game.
Inside the Numbers
- For the third consecutive time, Florida Southern has not been able to score despite putting 12 shots on goal.
- Staten and the Mocs defense was strong in the first half not allowing the Sailfish to score giving the keeper five saves on the night.
