FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Caitlyn Lowery nearly erased a three-goal deficit in the second half of Saturday's Sunshine State Conference (SSC) matchup at Nova Southeastern University, but the Sharks held on for a 3-2 victory over Florida Southern College.
Down by three after Nova (3-3-1, 1-1-0 SSC) converted a penalty kick in the 63rd minute, Lowery sparked the Moccasin offensive with two goals less than 15 minutes apart. Shortly after Lowery's tally in the 86th minute, Florida Southern (3-4-0, 0-2-0 SSC) had a chance to force overtime, but
Haley Thomassy was denied with approximately two-and-a-half minutes left in regulation.
How It Happened
- The Mocs were the more productive team on paper, as FSC held advantages in shots (17-to-7) and corners (9-to-2).
- Southern, however, surrendered the game's first goal in the sixth minute and trailed by as many as three goals in the second half.
- Dani Correa was responsible for all three Nova goals, including a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.
- Lowery netted two goals, one in the 71st minute and another in the 86th minute, highlighted by a PK of her own.
- Trailing by just one after Lowery's second goal, the Mocs had one more opportunity to force extra time. Thomassy took FSC's last shot of the night, but Nova goalie Natalie Robayna saved it to preserve the win.
- The Mocs had one more corner kick in the 89th minute but couldn't muster a shot on the play.
