LAKELAND, Fla. - Barry University handed Florida Southern College's volleyball team its first Sunshine State Conference loss on the young season, 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 22-25, 22-25), on Saturday afternoon at Streamline Sale Arena inside the George W. Jenkins Field House.
Despite a team-high 17 kills from
Mackenzie Petermann, the Mocs (6-2, 3-1 SSC) were unable to hold off the Buccaneers (7-1, 3-1) in the end.
How It Happened
- First Set (Barry 25, Florida Southern 22): Ali Travis had a busy first set racking up five kills, six digs and two blocks. Jana Gilic added four kills as the Mocs fell behind early 7-2 and weren't able to catch up. The Mocs led in kills (15-13), digs (21-18) and blocks (3-2), but errors gave the first set to the visiting Buccaneers.
- Second Set (Florida Southern 25, Barry 19): The Mocs rallied late with an 8-2 run to tie the match at 1-1. With the score tied at 17-17, Florida Southern went on a 4-0 run to take control and pull away for the set win. Travis once again
- Third set (Barry 25, Florida Southern 22): Florida Southern got off to a fast start, pushing out to a 6-2 lead before Barry clawed back and eventually won four of the final five points after the score was tied at 21-21.
- Fourth set (Barry 25, Florida Southern 22): The Mocs led by four points twice, but the Bucs once again rallied to take the game-clinching set.
Inside the Numbers
- Florida Southern finished the game with 10 blocks.
- Travis had a double-double for Florida Southern with 13 kills and 16 digs.
- Cassidy Markel also had a double-double for the Mocs with a game-high 47 assists and 13 digs.
- Beatrice Formilan had a team-high 25 digs.
- Tierra Porter hit .429 with six kills and zero errors, while logging four total blocks on defense.
- The Mocs had a hit percentage of just .179 and committed eight service errors, which contributed to the loss.
