Mocs Winning Streak Stopped at Four in Loss to Saint Leo

LAKELAND, Fla. — Florida Southern College women's basketball saw their winning streak come to an end with a tough 70-66 loss at George W. Jenkins Field House in Streamline Sale Arena against Saint Leo.
 
"I keep telling the team everybody is going to play their best game against us," said head coach Betsy Harris. "We have to have the same mentality, we can't win championships with inconsistency. We just are going to have to do the best we can and move on to the next game."


Florida Southern falls to 7-7 overall and 5-3 in the Sunshine State Conference. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter

  • At the 7:14 mark Ashley Shell hit a layup to close Saint Leo 3-0 early lead. 
  • Julia Jenike eventually gave Florida Southern their first lead, sinking a 3-pointer to make it 5-3 with just under seven minutes remaining.
  •  The Lions answered with a three of their own but freshman Arielle Dabu sank a 3-pointer to tie the game at 10 apiece.
  • The entire first 8 minutes of play were a back and forth battle with a Whitney Jacob layup for another 14-all tie. 
  • With FSC adrenaline running, freshman Paula Real came in fresh from the bench to sink a shot beyond the arc and make it a 3-point lead from the 1:55 mark. 
  • The quarter ended with a 21-19 lead for the Moccasins after Mackenzie Steele and Marissa Jenike both hit layups to close out the quarter. 
2nd Quarter
  • The quarter started out sending Steele to the line where the junior hit both shots to put Florida Southern up by four. 
  • Saint Leo went on a 4–0 run before Steele and J. Jenike answered back with back-to-back jumpers to make it 33-27 going into the media timeout. 
  • It was another run from the Lions to put them up by 10 before J.Jenike hit her second 3-point jumper of the night to make it 37-30. 
  • Dabu closed it out with a fast break layup for the Mocs; but Saint Leo took back their 10 point lead to make it 42-32 going into halftime. 
3rd Quarter
  • The third quarter started the same as the first with a battle at the net where Jacob hit a layup and shortly later was sent to the line on a foul going 2-for-2 from the free throw line. 
  • Sara Wohlgemuth battled around Saint Leo hitting a layup, followed by a steal and another layup to bring the Mocs within five points of the Lions, 45-40, with 7:19 on the clock. 
  • Make that a 45-42 deficit as Jacob was fouled sending the graduate student to the line sinking both shots for FSC. 
  • Wohlgemuth brought Florida Southern within three hitting a jumper to make it a 47-44 game with 5:37 left in the quarter.
  • Another run from Saint Leo gave the Lions their third 10-point lead, until Wohlgemuth cut it down to 54-46 lead hitting both free throws. 
  • Domenica Zamora goes to the net for a layup and is fouled sending the red shirt sophomore to the line, where she hits both free throws to end the quarter down only by six with a 56-50 score. 
 4th Quarter
  • To start the final quarter for the Mocs, M. Jenike hit a layup and shortly after sank a shot beyond the arc to add five points for FSC to make it a 63-56 at the 6:32 mark. 
  • A foul for the Saint Leo on Steele sent her to the line, as the Plant City native hit both shots to come within five points.
  • The five point deficit continued as J. Jenike hit a jumper followed by a layup to make it another five point at 65-60 and 67-62 with 2:15 remaining in the quarter.
  • Wohlgemuth got the defensive rebound and later broke away from the five point game to make it a three point after a layup to make it 67-64 with 1:08 left in regulation. 
  • With 12 seconds left on the clock, Wohlgemuth got her own offensive rebound and hit a second chance layup and made it 69-66.
  • Saint Leo was fouled to end the quarter as the Lions end the game with a 70- 66 decision. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Despite the outcome, FSC improved on their shooting with 40.7 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from beyond the arc. 
  • For the second straight game, Graduate Student J. Jenike led the way for FSC going 7-for-16 from the field and 2-for-4 from beyond the arc for 16 points. 
  • Wohlgemuth was the only other Moc to finish in double-digits with 12 points going 5-for-8 from the paint and 2-for-2 from the line. 
  • Defensively, the Moccasins were led by Shell and Wohlgemuth as Shell had six boards followed by the redshirt freshman with five respectfully.

Florida Southern will host Nova Southeastern on Saturday when the Sharks come to town for a 5:30 p.m. tip off.
