TAMPA, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team finished their regular season road schedule undefeated with a 2-0 win against the University of Tampa Wednesday night at UT Pepin Stadium. The win marks Florida Southern's sixth straight win and first 10-win season since 2010.
The Mocs (10-1-3, 6-1-1 SSC), mentioned as one of eight teams under postseason consideration in the first NCAA regional rankings, scored first by
Madison Male and a late goal by
Caitlyn Lowery for the 2-0 win. The Spartans (6-6-2, 2-3-2 SSC) were unable to tally a shot on goal in the second half, leading to Moccasin keeper
Jenny Staten's fifth shutout of the season.
To start the game, both teams traded possession and eventually, traded shots in the early minutes. The first scoring opportunity of the night came from a strong shot by
Angelina Coelho but was saved by Tampa keeper Megan Hessel.
At the halfway point of the first half, an offensive push by the Mocs set up a corner kick. The keep corner hit the box perfectly and off several players and a high bounce allowed Male to head the ball off the keeper's gloves for the score.
The Mocs kept the pressure with another great opportunity for the Mocs after a blocked shot found
Lindsey Meyer, who nearly scored the goal but was saved by the Spartans keeper. Tampa fired their shots late in the first half but was managed by
Jenny Staten with two saves in the half.
With the lead to start the second half of play, Florida Southern had a great shot by
Malia Brost that was saved by Tampa, the fourth shot on goal for the Mocs to that point. Florida Southern's defense kept the Spartans' offense at bay while
Tatum Albrecht and Brost added each added a shot on goal, both of which were saved by Tampa. C. Lowery added a goal in the final three minutes, and conference-high ninth goal of the season.
The Mocs return to Lakeland to finish out their regular season schedule, first in a match against Barry this Saturday, Oct. 22, and the regular season finale against Rollins on Tuesday, Oct. 25, both set for a 7 p.m. start at Berend Field.
