Mocs Win Another Conference Road Game With Win Over Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team won another conference road game with a 1-0 victory over Saint Leo University Tuesday night in the Mocs' return to play after postponements due to Hurricane Ian.

The Mocs (6-1-3, 3-1-1 SSC) won the game with freshman Angelina Coelho's fourth goal of the season early in the second half. The Lions (6-3-1, 2-3-0 SSC) held the Mocs even at the half but were unable to find the net as Florida Southern held Saint Leo to seven shots in the game.

Both squads were even through the first half of the match, with a defensive focus on the pitch. The first shot attempt of the game came 15 minutes in with a shot by Courtney Chomko that was off target. Caitlyn Lowery tried her shot a few minutes later, this time a save by the Lions to keep the game tied at zero. The Lions and Mocs traded shots in the remaining portion of the first half, with a shot by Saint Leo on target that was saved by Moccasin keeper Jenny Staten.

Florida Southern entered the second half on an offensive strike with shots by Coelho and a shot on goal by Malia Brost. Ten minutes into the second half, Lindsey Meyer dribbled into the box for a high cross to Coelho, who headed the ball into the goal for the 1-0 Moccasin lead. Meyer had her third assist of the season, and Coelho, her fourth goal of the season on the game-winning play.

The Mocs kept the pressure on the Lions for most of the second half, with a great defense to keep the game in the Moccasin's favor. In the final 10 minutes of the game, the Lions had five shots in a last effort to tie, but Florida Southern held strong for the 1-0 road win.

Staten, last week's SSC Defensive Player of the Week, ended with four saves in the game, facing seven shots. Florida Southern held the shot advantage, with 11 shots total. Coelho led with four shots in the game, with Meyer right behind with three shots. Saint Leo had two saves in the loss.

The Mocs have a quick turnaround with a match tomorrow night, Oct. 5th, against Edward Waters, set for a 7 p.m. start at Berend Field.
