LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team took down Edward Waters University on Wednesday night with a decimating seven-goal shutout at Berend Field.
Heidi Harris started the game in goal for the Moccasins (7-1-3, 3-1-1 SSC) and earned her first collegiate shutout after making three saves and allowing zero corner kicks to the opposing Tigers (1-7-1).
The game was even through the first thirty minutes, as both sides exchanged scoring opportunities and held equal possession. However, after a slew of substitutions, the Mocs found their footing when
Caitlyn Lowery scored her sixth goal of the year to give her team the lead in the 33
rd minute. The assist came from
Alison Jenkins, who earned possession on the left wing and delivered a cross to Lowery inside the box to start the scoring streak for Florida Southern. Jenkins would go on to record two assists and a goal later in the game.
In the following minute,
Malia Brost earned possession of the ball at midfield and fired a long pass to freshman
Maris Kern. The Leesberg, Va. native gathered the ball in stride before slipping in a sharp-angle shot to score her first collegiate goal.
C. Lowery once again found the back of the net before the end of the half, taking a feed in the box from
Anita Vera before rifling a shot through the opposing goalkeeper's hands, with just over eight minutes to play.
The Mocs took their 3-0 lead into the half and continued success early on in the second frame. Freshman
Jasmin Adames tallied her third goal of the season in the 53
rd minute, overpowering her defender and finishing the one-on-one with a powerful strike towards the far post.
The score remained 4-0 until Florida Southern capitalized on a clean passing sequence in the 71
st minute.
Haley Thomassy earned possession off of a neat pass from Jenkins, and cruised down the left wing before assisting Claire Duree, who was wide open on the far post.
The Moccasins added to their lead when
Meghan Kriney, who finished the night with four shot attempts, found the back of the net off of a feed from Jenkins. The traditional goalkeeper played 65 minutes in the field for the Mocs, scoring her third collegiate goal in the 75
th minute.
After immediately earning possession on the ensuing kickoff, Jenkins scored a goal herself. She worked down the right wing and past the Tigers defense, converting from right in front of the goalmouth after she drew the visitor's goalkeeper away. Freshman
Abby DeSalvo earned her first collegiate point on the seventh goal of the night, as she was able to lead Jenkins on the right wing.
The Moccasins, who played for the second time in as many days, earned their third straight victory and are now 5-0-1 in their last six matches. They'll return to play this Saturday as they travel to West Palm Beach to take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish at 6 p.m.
