LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's soccer team tied Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, 3-3 after the teams combined for three goals in the span of under two minutes at the end of the game.
The final result was 3-3 with the Moccasins (2-3-4, 0-2-2 SSC) gathering tallies from
Henri Tophoven,
Kyle Carr, and
Mathias Kjolner. The Eagles (2-5-3, 0-3-2 SSC) held control of the game until the final few minutes after scoring an equalizing goal in the 21st minute.
Tophoven started the scoring with an early strike, his tenth of the year, in the fourth minute.
The game remained knotted at one going into the half, with the Moccasins outshooting the Eagles 7-3. It wasn't until the 53rd minute that Embry-Riddle took the lead after an Eagles forward made an excellent individual play to get the ball past Mocs goalkeeper
AJ Pearce, who finished with three saves on the day.
The game truly grew memorable in the final three minutes. Despite the Moccasins enjoying a healthy advantage in shots for the majority of the contest, they trailed 2-1 until the 88th minute.
Tophoven delivered a well-placed cross into the box from the right wing, falling to the foot of Carr, who scored his second goal of the season.
With the game seemingly destined to end in a draw, the Mocs' goalkeeper Pearce delivered a booming pass that spanned three-quarters of the field, settling at the edge of the box. With 70 seconds on the clock, Kjolner fired home the sharp-angle shot, sending the Moccasin bench into a frenzy, and giving Florida Southern a 3-2 lead.
The Eagles would pull off a stunning feat when they countered the pair of quick Moccasin goals, earning the draw after the ball sprung loose in front of the Mocs goal. With 43 seconds left, Embry-Riddle tied it, and the score would remain tied for the remainder of the match.
After the action-packed end to Wednesday's game, the Moccasins will now set their sight on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish, as they'll play at home this Saturday night, at 7 p.m.
