Mocs Minutes: Basketballs Return to SSC Play, Host Eckerd Wednesday

  • Florida Southern is currently on a five game win streak after their trip to Puerto Rico during the holiday. FSC went 2-0 with a 75-51 win against UPR-Rio Piedras and closed out the trip with a 82-46 win over UPR-Mayaguez. These two wins for the Mocs were the biggest wins of the season thus far. As a team the Mocs earned several team-highs including field goal attempts (78), 3 point field goal attempts (22), rebounds (56), assists (22), and steals (19).
  • The Mocs have played three games in seven days and were led by graduate student Ashley Shell to start the break with 22 points, sophomore Anna Denes with 17 points, and with a new career-high of 22 points sophomore Marissa Jenike to close out the trip. In two of the three games there were four players with double-digit scoring.
  • Current Sunshine State Conference defensive player of the week Domenica Zamora led the team during the Puerto Rico trip just shy of a double-double with 10 defensive rebounds, and nine points. Denes also scored in double-digits during the week with 11 during the Lincoln game at home and 17 and 13 respectively on the Island of Enchantment.
  • Eckerd currently owns the same record as FSC with a 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the SSC, the Tritons are on a two game win streak where their only loss was to Angelo State University with a 70-63 final score. EC just recently defeated No. 9 Bentley University on Saturday with a 20-point deficit to finish 71-51. With only playing one game in conference thus far, the Tritons defeated the Lynn University Fighting Knights by a score of 82-51 at home. As a team Eckerd is averaging 71.5 points per game while FSC averages 78.0.
  • The Tritons were led by Lauryn Vieira just shy of a double-double as she tallied 16 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Eckerd shot 10-for-14 at the free throw line, with Wentworth shooting 4-for-5, and Scales with a perfect 2-for-2. The Tritons converted 12 points off of Falcons' turnovers. Eckerd outshot Bentley in the paint 30 to 22.
  • Eckerd is led by Hannah Wentworth with 83 points in six games, but only is coming down with seven defensive boards. Last year's SSC player of the year, Maya Price is close behind Wentworth with 79 points followed by Sofia Persson with 71. Persson is the defensive leader with 45 total to tally 7.5 boards per game.
  • HISTORY:The Tritons and Mocs met four times last year as the Mocs earned three wins until the region where the Tritons defeated FSC with a score of 69-64 to end the Moccasin season in the first round of the South Region tournament in Tennessee.

  • Florida Southern looks to host Eckerd in the programs return to league play after going 2-0 at the Terrace Hotel Thanksgiving Classic where the Moccasins defeated Anderson (SC) 112-91 and then held off Wisconsin Parkside 74-73, thanks to a strong defensive effort from E.J. Dambreville and Wes Bongiorni. Trailing by one, Dambreville swiped the in-bounds pass which converted to a go-ahead three from Connor Raines before Bongiorni stole the pursuing in-bounds pass, also leading to Raines points, a pair of free throws. The Rangers made a wide-open uncontested three at the buzzer to bring the game to its one-point final.
  • Jadin Booth is the team and conference leader in scoring averaging 22.3 points per game (134 total points). E.J. Dambreville is second on the team with 20.5 ppg (123 total), and Luke Anderson at 10.0 ppg (60 total). Dambreville leads the team in rebounding averaging 9.7 a game while Tray Alexander is the team leader in assists with 22 total. Wes Bongiorni puts the defensive pressure on where he paces the team with 14 steals, five ahead of Alexander with nine. Southern averages 91.2 points a game and holds opponents to 84.0.
  • The Mocs have eclipsed 100 points twice this season, a 100-98 win at Clayton State and the 112-91 win over Anderson. With the pair of wins when scoring 100 points, FSC moves to 156-7 all-time in program history.
  • Florida Southern opened its SSC season with a 73-72 win over Palm Beach Atlantic back on Nov. 19 where Jadin Booth was the top scorer for the Red and White with 20 points, just ahead of E.J. Dambreville with 19 and Tray Alexander with 12. Dambreville notched his second double-double of the season adding 14 rebounds to his stat line.
  • Eckerd stands at 3-1 on the young season and is coming off a 1-1 appearance at the Eckerd Thanksgiving Classic where the Tritons defeated Davenport 77-70 in the opener before falling to Wayne State College 89-87 in the finale Saturday night.
  • Three players average double-figures through for games with Daniel Love and Carr Thiam at 16.0 apiece. The duo are joined by Kent Garard at 10.5 while Joshua Galloway and Mekhi Perry outside looking in nearly averaging the 10.0 points per game at 9.3 and 9.0, respectively. The Tritons average 84.5 ppg and hold their opponents to 75.3.
  • The Tritons opened the 2022-23 season on Nov. 19 with its conference matchup with Lynn, defeating the Fighting Knights 85-73. In the season-opening win, Eckerd saw Daniel Love go for 19 points while Carr Thiam had 15, David Swedura 14, and Kent Garard at 11. Mekhi Perry just missed the double-digit performance by one, scoring nine points for the Tritons.
  • HISTORY: Through the first 100 meetings, Florida Southern holds a 76-40 record with Eckerd including a six-game win streak, and a 7-3 record in the last 10 meetings. In the last matchup in Lakeland on Feb. 19, 2022, Florida Southern dominated Eckerd 93-51, holding the Tritons to just 15 first half points. Four players scored in double-figures for FSC led by Jack Casale with 21, followed by E.J. Dambreville with 17, Jadin Booth and Xavier Rhodes with 10 apiece. The Tritons saw Kent Garard and GianFranco Grafals as the lone two in double-figures with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
