Mocs Complete Season Sweep of Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Florida Southern volleyball team earned its second win of the season over the Rollins College Tars Thursday night on the road in Winter Park. The Mocs took the opening two sets before dropping the third. In the fourth, the Tars led 16-8 midway through the period and eventually took a 24-22 lead but the Mocs did not give up as they fought off two set points before taking the set 27-25.

The victory snaps a four-match losing streak for the Mocs and moves their record to 14-12 overall and 7-9 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Tars fall to 7-22 on the year and 2-16 in league play.

Senior Ali Travis led the way Thursday night with a team-best 16 kills while digging up seven balls and posting a block. Junior Mackenzie Petermann and senior Jana Gilic each chipped in eight kills with Gilic tallying her total on just 17 swings with no errors for an impressive .471 hitting percentage. Gilic also had a stellar defensive performance with a team-high eight blocks including one solo. She also had a service ace. Petermann had nine digs and added a block and an ace. Sophomore Madison Fowler finished one kill back with seven while chipping in three blocks.

Senior setter Mika Garza handed out 37 assists while digging up 10 balls for her eighth double-double of the season. She also led the team with a trio of service aces. Graduate student libero Beatrice Formilan led the backline with 21 digs over just three sets for an impressive 7.00 digs per set average.

The Mocs opened the match with a pair of strong sets where they hit .400 as a team and won 25-17 and 25-22. After the five minute "halftime" break, the Mocs offense did not return at its previous pace as FSC hit just .086 over the final two frames including .025 in the final and deciding set. The Tars took the third set 25-16 before the drama filled fourth set. Despite struggling to find their offensive rhythm, the Mocs scored points when they needed to in the fourth set to over come a 16-8 deficit including fighting off a pair of set points.

Florida Southern will return to action this Saturday, Nov. 5 on the road at Embry-Riddle. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Daytona Beach.
