Mocs Fall at the Buzzer in Late Rally against Fighting Knights

LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College women's basketball battled till the end but the Moccasins dropped the last game of the 2022 year 69-68 to Lynn University at the buzzer. 
 
With the loss, the Mocs fall to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the Sunshine State Conference while the Fighting Knights improve to 10-3 on the season and 3-2 in the SSC. 

"It's a tough loss," said interim head coach Megan Dzikas '12. "But it's also a learning loss for us as well we are going to learn from this but I am proud of them I just wish it was a different outcome."
 
Senior Domenica Zamora led Florida Southern with 18 points to tie her career-high, sinking a three-pointer that took a late lead at 3:44 in the fourth. The final three minutes of action were a battle as the FSC and Lynn tied the game and each team took a lead after free throws, but it was the Fighting Knights that came away with the free throw to seal the fate for the Mocs. 
 
Florida Southern battled with Lynn as the contest saw eight ties in just the first half and three lead changes. The Fighting Knights started out with a 3-0 lead after sinking an early three, Zamora cut the lead and tied it with an and one with 8:45 in the first. 
 
Lynn took another lead that was tied up once again after sophomore Anna Denes hit a shot from beyond the arc to make it seven-all. FSC took a lead after a three from sophomore Marissa Jenike and a jumper from Ashley Shell to make it 12-9. The Fighting Knights went on to tie it at the with a three of their own going on a run to increase their lead by 18-16 with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter. 
 
The second quarter started with a Jenike three to tie the game once again at 21-21. Southern and Lynn battled two more ties before the Fighting Knights went on a 13-0 run increasing their lead to 37-26 with 4:23 remaining. FSC tried to cut the tie but went into the locker room down by six at the half. 
 
Lynn led the entire third quarter and up to the 3:44 mark during the fourth when Zamora hit a three-point jumper to make it 66-65. Mocs kept the lead until six seconds on the clock when Jada Marone hit both free throws that resulted in a one-point win for Lynn. 
 
Zamora led the way with 18 points followed by Jenike with 15 points from the field going 4-for-6 from the arc. Shell led the Mocs on the defensive end coming down with 10 boards to tie her season high. 
 
UP NEXT
The Mocs jump right back into action to start the new year, traveling to Fort Lauderdale to face the Sharks of RV Nova Southeastern. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Rick Case Arena.
