Live Coverage |
  • Opponent | Date | Time: Rollins College | February 23, 2022 | 4:00 PM

  • Florida Southern earned their first win of the spring 2022 season in a 7-0 shutout home dual meet against Eckerd on Monday afternoon. The importance of winning the doubles competition point was a focus for head coach Trish Riddell, and the Mocs brought that into the start of their match against the Tritons. A clean sweep of the doubles competition carried momentum into the singles play as the Mocs won all six of their singles competition. Freshmen Maxima Ellenberg and Vivien Charvatova won their first collegiate singles match with the Mocs as all but one of the Florida Southern matches won in two sets. Laura Vetter showed grit in her third set tiebreaker win, as a win by Mathilda Vidgren was the match-deciding victory.
  • Rollins lost their last match against Division I opponent Army in a 4-0 decision. The Tars have faced three straight DI opponents, with loses from Stetson, Air Force, and Army. Rollins first opponent of the year was a 6-1 loss to No. 1 Barry. Despite the loss, Natalia Collado Cordon for the Tars had a strong performance with straight tiebreak sets in her two-set loss. The other three singles matches went unfinished as Army sealed the match win and teams elected not to continue. Alexandra Borg nearly won her match against Sophie McKenzie after she won set one but lost the next two sets. With Rollins still looking for their first win, the match between the Mocs and Tars is set to be a good one.
  • SENIOR NIGHT
  • Opponent: Embry-Riddle
  • Date|Time: February 23, 2022 | 5:30 PM
  • Location: Lakeland, Fla. | George W. Jenkins Field House
  • Records: Florida Southern 17-8, 15-4 SSC | Embry-Riddle 11-12, 9-9
  • Florida Southern continues to shine off a nine-game win streak with the last win in a 61-54 overtime thriller against No. 12/15 Eckerd College Saturday night. The Mocs were led by Whitney Jacob, who won her fourth SSC Player of the Week award yesterday. Jacob had 18 points and seven rebounds to go with her two steals. Florida Southern fell behind in the first quarter but tied the game to start the second and continued a back-and-forth battle through the fourth. The Tritons took the lead with less than a minute left before Domenica Zamora drained a three to put the Mocs within one. Jacob found Julia Jenike in the paint for a contested layup and tie game with 5.2 seconds left. The Mocs stayed consistent and stout defense kept the Tritons at bay for the ninth-straight victory for the Florida Southern women.
  • On the season, Jenike and Jacob continue to represent the Mocs in the top of the conference standings for scoring. Jacob sits in second with 17.1 points a game as Jenike is tied for third with 15.3 a game. An overlooked plus in close battles is a 90.2% free throw percentage by Jenike, which is second best in the conference. Sara Wohlgemuth is second for assist/turnover ratio averaging 1.7 built by a sixth-best 3.3 assists average.
  • In conference play, Florida Southern stayed in the top three in offensive scoring with 68.4 points a game and margin of victory with 8.1 average. Defensively the Mocs are fifth, but they continue to emphasize 3-point shooting with a second-best 34.1% from beyond the arc and fourth in the conference in average 3-pointers per game with 7.5. Florida Southern can point to turnovers as a key to their nine-game winning streak as they lead the SSC in both turnover margin (4.80) and the assist/turnover ratio with 1.11.
  • Embry-Riddle travels to Lakeland after losing their last two games in a row. Their loss last week came from an 83-52 loss to Eckerd, before a 67-56 loss to Barry on Saturday. The Eagles had three players in double-digits, including a double-double by Ketura Balabyekkubo, who had 12 points and 13 rebounds in the loss. Embry-Riddle shot 37.5% from the field and had 20 turnovers. Initially with the lead in the first quarter, the Eagles were unable to keep the flow as Barry took over in the second, never to regain the lead for the rest of the game.
  • On the season the Eagles are shooting 40.8% from the field for an average of 62.8 points a game. Their opponents are shooting 37.6% with a 3.2 scoring margin in favor of Embry-Riddle. A problem for the Eagles lies in turnovers as they average 17.8 a game. Averaging more points in the fourth quarter than any other period, the Eagles rally to narrow deficits or overcome an opponent.
  • In conference play the Eagles sit in seventh overall in the SSC standings, fighting to stay in the mix for an appearance in the SSC Women's Basketball Championships set to begin next week. Winning an even .500 of their conference games, the Eagles are led by Nikki Tucker who is fourth in the conference in average rebounds (7.1) and leads the team with 12.3 points a game.
  • HISTORY The last time the Mocs and Eagles met was on January 5th in Daytona Beach as the Mocs won 63-44 after a 20-point performance by Julia Jenike. The Mocs hold a 9-4 all-time series lead over Embry-Riddle and three straight wins.
