Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

#7 Mocs Comeback Falls Short Against #3 Queens

LAKELAND, Fla. - The No. 7 Florida Southern College women's lacrosse team dropped their first game of the season to No. 3 Queens University of Charlotte on Sunday afternoon at Berend Field, 12-9, moving to 1-1 on the season.

Preceding the battle on the field between the two ranked opponents, the Moccasins celebrated senior day with an on-field presentation. Marlee Moon Gaddy, Hailey Daleo, Katie Yeagle, Ally Louden, Brenna Smith, Abby Hammond, Jill Boehmcke, Lizzy Lynch, Patricia Werker, and Brittany Iamele were all recognized prior to the first draw control.

Werker got the start in net for the second consecutive game, and played well despite the loss, accumulating 10 saves on 22 shots on goal while playing all 60 minutes.

The Queens Royals (4-0) held an early advantage, scoring the first two goals of the game. Smith and Daleo countered with a pair of free position goals as the first quarter ended with the Mocs trailing 3-2. Florida Southern wound up scoring five of their goals on free position shots.

The Royals opened up the second quarter with four straight goals, pitting the Mocs in a five-goal deficit at the half, as they trailed 7-2.

Florida Southern came out firing in the second half, out-shooting Queens 8-2 in the third quarter. After the Royals built a six-goal lead, Abby McFerren found Lynch, who broke the Moccasin drought with a goal on the crease. The Royals responded with another goal, but Gaddy answered with another successful free position shot to begin a streak of five straight Moccasin goals.

Madison Tare struck to bring the game within four before FSC rattled off three player-up tallies to bring the game within one at the end of the third quarter. McFerren and Smith each scored before Madison Kennedy scored her first goal of the season to close out the quarter.

Defensive play highlighted the final quarter, as the Royals were able to stave off the Mocs, who were unable to tie the game in the fourth, despite another goal from McFerren. Queens was able to strike twice more in the final period and ran the clock out to secure the 12-9 win.
