HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Florida Southern College baseball team hit four home runs, including a grand slam, in a 19-5 rout of the University of Alabama in Huntsville Friday afternoon at Charger Park.
The Mocs (12-9, 4-2 SSC) hit their first grand slam of the season with a four RBI homer by
Connor Berry in the top of the sixth to go along with a new season-high 23 hits on the day. The Chargers (6-14, 2-6 GSC) hit a homer in the first to score two runs but could not keep up with the Mocs in a 19-5 loss.
Florida Southern took an early 2-0 lead in the first with hits by
Nathan Chevalier and Berry, but it was a two RBI single by
Jared DeSantolo that set the score. The Chargers evened the score with their first inning round with a two-run homer by Ezzell, but that would be the last time UAH tied the game. The Mocs retook the lead in the second inning with a two-run homer by
Jeff Liquori and another RBI single for DeSantolo from a
Duncan Hunter double.
Continuing with the deep ball, Chevalier joined in on the home runs with two-run homer and for the second time this season, the Mocs hit back-to-back home runs as Hunter added a solo homer. With a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the third, the Chargers attempted to tally scores, but left three on base for
Brant Brown to escape the inning for the Mocs. UAH hit a sacrifice fly to score in the fourth, but the Mocs continued their scoring with six runs and six hits in the fifth to continue a 15-4 lead into the sixth inning.
With one out in the top of the sixth,
Nick Wells singled to left field before back-to-back walks set up a bases loaded situation. Berry capitalized on the opportunity with a grand slam and four RBI shot, the first grand slam for the Mocs since Wells hit one last year against Tampa. Despite Florida Southern scoreless in the seventh and eighth, the Mocs carried a 19-4 lead before Chargers cut into the lead with a single run in the bottom of the eighth as Mocs roll with a 19-5 win.
Six Moccasins had at least three hits as Chevalier, Liqouri, Hunter, DeSantolo, and Berry each had three hits.
Ryan Jenkins led the Mocs with four hits as Hunter continued to shine and extend his hit streak to 19 games. With five doubles and four home runs, today's game marks the first time since 2018 that the Mocs had nine or more extra base hits.
