Mocs Tennis Nearly Beat No. 15 Tampa, But Fall Short

TAMPA, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's tennis team lose a close one against No. 15 University of Tampa Wednesday afternoon at the Naimoli and Young Tennis Center.

The Mocs (11-8, 3-6 SSC), ranked 34th in the latest ITA poll, won the doubles point, but unable to tally enough singles flight wins to upset Tampa. The Spartans (12-6, 5-4 SSC) took control of singles competition and won the match 4-3 over the Mocs.

A great job by Florida Southern in doubles competition as they won two of the three flights, winning the doubles point. Laura Vetter and Mathilda Vidgren won in a commanding 6-1 flight, as did Vivien Charvatova and Maxima Ellenberg, 6-4 over their Tampa opponent. With the point secured, the Mocs took the momentum into singles.

Vidgren highlighted the singles competition with a big win to upset No. 24 Maeva Roquebert in two sets. After her first set win, the second set went to a tiebreaker point, which Vidgren won. The sole other singles win for the Mocs came by Olivia Bryant as she won in two sets. A tough match for Vetter as she nearly took down her Tampa opponent in the first set, but lost the tiebreaker point and lost her flight. Flor Salerno, Minnie Kim, and Isabella Bolivar also fought hard in singles, as the Spartans rebound and win 4-3.
