TAMPA, Fla. – Huge night for the Florida Southern College baseball team as they shutout No. 2 Tampa with a 5-0 win Friday night at the UT Baseball Field.
The Mocs (25-17, 16-6 SSC) had a big sixth inning to score five runs and shutout Tampa. The Spartans (32-7, 16-3 SSC) only managed two hits in the game and struggled to get on base as Florida Southern wins.
The game started as a pitching dual with
Nathan Madej tallying the win over Erbe. Madej went eight innings, struck out eight, and forced 10 groundouts in a stellar performance.
Duncan Hunter led the Mocs with three hits on the night and an RBI as
Connor Berry and
Jared DeSantolo each had two hits and three RBI between them.
Scoreless through five innings, the Mocs had opportunities, including back-to-back innings with a hit to start the game, but unable to score. The top of the sixth started with a single by
Nathan Chevalier, who advanced to second on an error by the short stop in a fielder's choice scenario. With two on, Hunter fed a liner through the left side to bring Chevalier home. Berry responded with an RBI single through the middle before DeSantolo did the same, this time bringing home two. The Mocs didn't' stop there as DeSantolo scored on a passed ball and 5-0 score in the sixth.
Madej went eight innings to continue to leave Tampa on base and scoreless for the next two innings of work. Fueled by the dugout, Florida Southern shutout the Spartans in the ninth with
Ryan Langford entering and striking out one for the Moccasin 5-0 victory.

The Mocs will return to Tampa to take on the Spartans in a doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 1 p.m. at UT Baseball Field.
