Mocs Minutes: Top-15 Women's Lacrosse Battle at Home Highlights Moc Midweek

  • Florida Southern enter 39th in the country and face a strong Embry-Riddle team. With their last five matches being ranked opponents, the Mocs won against No. 32 West Virginia State University and No. 41 PBA. Loses came against then No. 1 Nova, No. 7 Saint Leo, and returning top-ranked opponent Barry. Florida Southern's weekend win over PBA was highlighted by doules point win by pairing of Laura Vetter and Mathilda Vidgren, as well as Maxima Ellenberg and Flor Salerno. Vidgren won her singles flight, as did Isabella Bolivar and Olivia Bryant. Bryant has won her last eight of nine matches.
  • No. 28 Embry-Riddle is currently riding a 10-game win streak, after they upset No. 34 Rollins last week to improve to No. 28 in the latest ITA rankings poll. The Eagles won the doubles opint, including a near upset on #1 doubles with a 7-6 (8-6) loss over Groth/Borg, the No. 11 doubles pairing in the nation. Embry-Riddle is led by Itxaso Blanco, who is ranked 11th in the nation in singles, with an 11-1 record on the season so far. Their win over Rollins was Embry-Riddle's fourth win of the year over ranked opponents.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold a slight advantage over the Eagles with an 8-5 advantage, including a 6-1 win last year in Daytona Beach. The Mocs have won their last five matches in a row against the Eagles, and 4-2 record when in Lakeland.

  • #12 Florida Southern takes its four-game winning streak on the road to Sunshine State Conference rival Saint Leo. The Mocs are 4-1 this season on the road including 4-0 against non-ranked opponents.
  • Junior Jeff Atlas continues to lead the team in points and assists while ranking second in goals. He has 30 goals, 34 assists and 64 points through 11 games this season. He is coming off a 10-point performance against Embry-Riddle where he scored five goals and handed out five assists in the 18-6 victory. He currently ranks first in the Sunshine State Conference in assists per game (3.09), second in points per game (5.82) and sixth in goals per game (2.73). He also currently ranks fourth in the NCAA in assists per game and fourth in points per game. Junior Sean Nolan leads the team in goals with 31 while ranking fifth in the conference in goals per game with 2.82.
  • Senior Kevin Horwitz continues to give the Mocs an advantage at the X as he has won 68.7 percent of his faceoffs (202-294) this season including a 70.6 percent clip (154-218) in Florida Southern victories. He currently has 113 ground balls this season and ranks second in the SSC in ground balls per game (10.27) while leading the conference in faceoff winning percentage (.687). His faceoff percentage ranks eighth in the NCAA while his ground balls per game rank fourth overall.
  • The fifth-year senior continues to re-write the Florida Southern record book as he holds both the career records for ground balls (385) and faceoffs won (764). He has also already broken the single season ground balls record in 2022 with his 113. He surpassed Dan Krispinsky (2011-14) who had 90 ground balls during the 2013 season. He also just broke the single season mark for faceoff victories at FSC. Andrew Fisher (2014-15) won 199 face offs in 2015 to sit atop the rankings but Horwitz picked up his 200th faceoff victory versus Embry-Riddle to take the top spot. He now has 202 faceoff wins this season.
  • In goal for the Mocs, junior Maxwell Freestone continues to excel. He was named Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Embry-Riddle, giving him two DPOTW honors this season. He now has a 6-2 record in between the pipes with 86 saves over nine appearances and a 10.40 goals against average. He also has a .531 save percentage. He currently ranks third in the conference in goals against average and saves percentage.
  • Saint Leo is 5-3 on the season and is coming off a 19-13 setback at Florida Tech in the program's Sunshine State Conference opener. The Lions have not played a game since March 26 due to their battle with Palm Beach Atlantic this past Saturday being postponed due to inclement weather.
  • Sophomore Guy Bistrow leads the Lions in goals (28), assists (17) and points (45). He has three or more goals in six of his eight games this season. Senior Tyler Eames is second on the squad with 20 goals while senior Evan Wray ranks second in assists with 15. Sophomore Michael Flores mans the 'X' for the Lions and has won 56.3 percent of his attempts. Freshman Evan Hock was the starting goalkeeper for the Lions with a 4-2 record and a 14.34 goals against average. He has 71 saves on the season and has a .493 saves percentage. Junior Steve Lauter has started the last two contests and has a 1-1 record with a 13.32 goals against average and a .581 saves percentage to go along with 54 saves.
  • HISTORY: Wednesday night's game will mark the 18th meeting between the Mocs and Lions. Florida Southern holds a 10-7 advantage in the series but is 4-5 on the road at Saint Leo. The most recent meeting between the two squad took place April 8. 2021 as the Lions picked up a 12-11 overtime victory in Lakeland.

  • No. 5 Florida Southern hosts no. 15 Tampa after playing just 46-seconds at Lynn Saturday evening, before the game was postponed to weather.
  • On the season, Abby McFerren is the team leader with 36 points, 21 goals 15 assists, ahead of Hailey Daleo at 34. Daleo stands as the team leader in scoring with 25 goals. Lizzy Lynch is third on the team in points with 27 on 14 goals and 13 assists.
  • In goal, Patricia Werker has played the most minutes (287:09), faced the most shots (136) and has 46 saves with a 4-1 record. Brittany Iamele is 4-0 in 195:50 minutes played with 24 saves on 61 shots faced.
  • No. 15 Tampa is on a two-game win streak including its 20-8 Sunshine State Conference opener over Saint Leo on April 2. Madison Birch paced the team with six goals ahead of Sarah Hinkle's four. Kyli Warnkin played the full 60 minutes in goal with nine saves on 17 shots.
  • On the season, Birch is the team leader in goals and points with 28 and 31, respectively. Hinkle is second on the team in scoring with 22 goals while Olivia Mott is second on the team in points with 27, 12 goals and 15 assists.
  • In goal, Alex Walling has played 426:09 minutes of the 602:50 on the season with a 3-5 record. Kyli Warnkin is 2-0 in the last two games and started the lone SSC contest. Walling has 74 saves while Warnkin has 24.
  • History Florida Southern is 9-2 all-time against Tampa with a two-game win streak heading into the Wednesday matchup. The Moccasins are 6-1 all-time at home with a 19-4-win last season on May 7, 2021. In the head-to-head series, FSC averages 17.5 goals a game while UT averages 9.7, with two wins of 16 and 19 goals in 2019. This will be the sixth meeting between the two teams where both programs are ranked.

  • Florida Southern enter ranked 28th in the nation, according to the latest ITA poll. After their win streak was snapped by No. 2 Saint Leo, the Mocs have won their last two match, with 5-2 wins over Montevallo and No. 35 PBA to remain undefeated at home. The Mocs are led by Valentin Hertweck, who continues to shine and ranked 62nd in singles play. Florida Southern won their last match thanks to the doubles point win and four of the six singles flights going to the Mocs. Hertweck lost his first set but rallied for a singles flight win, as did Oscar Sohl. Brandon Pham and Erik Nordblom were the other Moccasin flight winners.
  • No. 6 Embry-Riddle heads to Lakeland after their last two matches were postponed due to weather concerns. Their last win was a 6-1 rout of No. 21 Rollins in Daytona Beach and led to an SSC Men's Tennis Athletic of the Week honor for Juan Ortiz Couder, his second of the season. During the Rollins match, Ortiz Couder defeated the 8th-ranked player in the nation in three sets, along with a 22nd-ranked doubles win alongside Luke Paschal. The Eagles have won three in a row, with their last loss a close 4-3 loss to No. 21 Wayne State. Loses to top-ranked Barry and Keiser were their only other loses on the year.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern has faced tough competition when taking on Embry-Riddle, as the Eagles hold a 12-4 advantage. Last time these teams faced each other, it was a 4-3 upset by the Eagles over then No. 12 Mocs in Daytona Beach.
