Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Thomassy Scores as Mocs Earn 1-1 Draw

LAKELAND, Fla. - Haley Thomassy scored her first career goal as the Florida Southern College women's soccer team settled for a draw against visiting Newberry College on Sunday afternoon.

The Moccasins (0-0-2) played their second game of the season at home after tying with Georgia College on Friday night. For the Newberry Wolves (0-1-1), this was their second game as well after falling to Saint Leo University on Friday.

The Mocs got a quick start, outplaying the visitors from Newberry for most of the first half. The team amassed seven shot attempts, as freshman Malia Brost had a grade-A opportunity with the game still scoreless near the midpoint of the first half.

She was able to gather the ball on her left foot, rocketing a shot to the opposing goalkeeper that momentarily rebounded out into the box. The shot on net shifted momentum to the home team as both sides substituted often towards the last few minutes of the first half.

Finally, with under a minute to go in the half, the Mocs broke through. Tatum Albrecht gathered the ball on the right wing and crossed the ball into the box. Freshman Alison Jenkins cut through to the net as the ball drifted towards the far post, where Thomassy blasted a shot past the keeper to give the Mocs their first lead of the season.

The teams headed into the break after the tally from the sophomore, with the Mocs leading, 1-0.

Momentum began to shift towards Florida Southern early in the second half, as the team earned a pair of corner kicks that each led to scoring opportunities. Freshman Angelina Coelho had one of four shot attempts on the day to keep the offense rolling.

Then, with just over thirty minutes to play, on their third shot attempt of the day, Newberry's Becca Lipp unleashed a floating shot from roughly 35 yards away that dropped into the back of the net, evening the score at one.

From that point on, the teams would exchange some decent scoring opportunities, with the Wolves taking six more shot attempts. The Mocs finished the day with 21 total attempts, six of which were on goal.

Neither team would muster another tally until the scoreboard showed double zeroes, giving the Mocs their second draw in as many opportunities.

The Mocs will take a mini road trip now as they play next at Spring Hill College on Sept. 2.
