PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team finished its weekend road trip undefeated with a 1-0 win against the University of West Florida at the UWF Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon. Mocs beat their Friday opponent Spring Hill College 6-0 in Mobile, Ala.
The Mocs (2-0-2) battled all game long, with freshman
Angelina Coelho the game winner in the second half to upset the Argos. West Florida (2-1-1), registering votes in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, outshot the Mocs throughout the game, but unable to keep the young striker out of the net as Florida Southern won.
A back-and-forth battle for the women as the first shot came at the 13-minute mark after the Argos took aim at the goal, but Moccasin keeper
Jenny Staten was there for the save. Florida Southern took their first shot a couple of minutes later, this by
Haley Thomassy, but was wide right.
The defense continued to work in the first half for the Mocs with blocked shots and a great job by the backline to keep the Argos out of the net and a 0-0 tie at the half.
West Florida started the attack early in the second half, but all their shots missed wide before the Mocs had their own shot attempt by
Brooke Lowery that was just over the net. Staten earned her second save of the day, after the Argos went low to the left, to keep the game tied halfway through the second half.
Florida Southern responded to the West Florida shot attempts with a fantastic goal by Coelho off a free kick just outside the box and 1-0 FSC score at the 67:49 mark. The Mocs continued the pressure on the Argos with a shot on goal by
Claire DuRee but saved by West Florida. Coelho added another shot on goal, but this time the Argos made the save. Great defense by the Mocs persisted as Florida Southern completed the upset with a 1-0 win.
The Mocs return to Lakeland this week for their first conference matchup of the season with a Saturday night game against Nova Southeastern University, set for a 7 p.m. start at Berend Field.
