MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team fell just short in a 2-1 loss against Barry University Saturday night.
The Mocs (8-5-3, 4-3-2 SSC) matched an early goal by Barry with a header by
Meghan Kriney but were unable to hold on in the conference road loss. The Buccaneers (4-7-3, 2-6-2 SSC) scored the game-winner in the final 10 minutes of the game off a cross to win their second conference game of the season.
Barry was first to score with a free kick into a crowded line of the attacking front to Tessa Evans for the goal in the first 70 seconds of the game. Despite the early deficit, the Moccasins looked to match with shots by
Jasmin Adames and
Rilee Hasegawa that were off target. In the 22
nd minute, a free kick taken by FSC keeper
Jenny Staten landed perfectly in the box for a header by Kriney to the open side of the net and a 1-1 tie.
With the game back to even in the first half, Florida Southern took the advantage in shots with six total in the first half, compared to the Buccaneers' two. Barry had one save in the first 45 minutes after a lasered shot by Hasegawa in the 28
th minute but none of the other Moccasin attempts found the net for a 1-1 tie at the half.
With a great assist in the first half off a free kick, Staten opened the second half opening minutes with a shot on goal with a free kick just past midfield that was saved by Barry's Caon. The rest of the second half went to the Bucs as BU out-shot the Mocs nine-to-four with Staten snatching three saves.
In the final 10 minutes, Barry scored what ended as the game-winner with a cross to the foot of Alia Jaidi that went off the hands of Staten and into the net. Shots by

Ori Gotauco were blocked or off-target in the final minutes to seal a Barry 2-1 win with only one game remaining for FSC with conference postseason implications on the line.
The Mocs will travel to Melbourne for the regular season finale in a game against Florida Tech on Tuesday, Oct. 31, set for a 7 p.m. start.
