MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Florida Southern College women's cross country team traveled to Montevallo, Ala. Saturday morning for the 2023 NCAA South Region Championship. The Moccasins returned to the course where they won both the individual and team titles earlier this season and posted a fifth-place finish, their best result at a region championship since 2019.
2023 Sunshine State Conference co-Runner of the Year
Emma Mussante led the Moccasins with a 18
th-place finish as she completed the 6K course in 21:32.4, the third fastest 6K in program history. The time was also good for the best 6K time in program history at an NCAA Regional as she surpassed
Jael Koech (2003-06) who posted a time of 21:34 at the 2005 NCAA South Region Championship.
Redshirt junior
Ellie Fluman finished five spots back in 23
rd as she crossed the finish line in 21:45.4 which ranks as the seventh fastest 6K time in program history. She also posted the fourth best 6K time at an NCAA Regional meet in FSC history. Graduate student
Cheyenne Young finished just inside the top-30 in 30
th with a mark of 22:04.3. Her time ranks as the seventh-best in program history at an NCAA Regional.
Junior
Mya Stam and freshman
Emma Nales-Torchio rounded out the scorers for the Mocs. Stam came across in 45
th after stopping the clock at 22:32.2 while Nales-Torchio finished five spots back in 50
th with a mark of 22:39.1.
The final two Moccasin finishers were freshmen
Kira Mothershed and
Grace Reed. Mothershed completed the course in 23:18.4 to earn a tie for 68
th overall while Reed came across five spots back in 74
th after crossing the line in 23:26.2.
Lee took home the team and individual titles Saturday as junior Aria Hawkins won the individual crown and the Flames posted 28 points to claim the team title. Sunshine State Conference Champions Tampa took second with 65 points just edging out Mississippi College who finished third with 68 points. Palm Beach Atlantic (127 pts.) and Florida Southern (164 pts.) rounded out the top-five.
