TAMPA, Fla. – The Florida Southern College volleyball team saw its season come to a close Friday night in Tampa, Fla. as the No. 1 University of Tampa Spartans defeated the Moccasins 3-0 in the semifinals of the 2023 NCAA Division II South Region Championship. The season marked the first under Head Coach
Ashlee Crowder and saw the Mocs capture 21 victories, the 38
th 20-plus win season in program history and first since 2018.
The Mocs finished the year with a 21-10 overall record while the top-ranked Spartans move onto the South Region Championship match with a mark of 30-1.
Junior
Zoe Lowe led the way offensively Friday night as she was the lone Moc to reach double-figures with 12 kills on 21 swings. She also added a pair of blocks. Graduate student
Elena Djokovic and junior
Kiersten Kraus finished with six and five kills, respectively, to rank second and third on the team. Djokovic added five digs while Kraus had 13 assists, six digs and a block.
Freshman setter
Mary Kate Mulvaney handed out 12 assists while securing five digs while senior libero
Caroline Chambers dug up 10 balls from the back row.
The Spartans held the Mocs to a season-low .061 hitting percentage in the match including posting nine blocks over the three sets. The Spartans hit .272 as a squad including posting .300-plus percentages in both the second and third sets.
Nathaly Perez led the offensive attack for the Spartans with 11 kills while Tess Schrenger and Mackenzie Dufresne had nine and eight, respectively.
UT took the match in straight sets, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20.
FSC will turn its attention to the offseason where the Mocs will say goodbye to four graduates including
Emily Crescenzi,
Elena Djokovic,
Cassidy Markel and
Jana Gilic.
