DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Florida Southern College softball opened up the Captain D's Surf N' Turf Classic hosted by the University of North Georgia with a difficult start falling 0-2. In game one of the day the Mocs fell 12-0 in six innings against the No.5 Nighthawks. In the nightcap, FSC tried to battle against King University but ultimately fell to the Tornados 8-2.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 0, NORTH GEORGIA 12
It looked to be anyone's game heading into the sixth inning as it remained 0-0. The Mocs started the day with junior
Kiki Morris stranded at second after a double to left field in the first inning. Three other Mocs tried to get something going as
Mariah Rodriguez,
Taylor Thomas, and
Jessica Bryson each reached base but nothing would fall to put the FSC on the board.
Right-handed pitcher
Kaylee Cowart pitched the first five innings, allowing five hits and no runs before senior
Tiana Hernandez came in relief. Cowart and Hernandez each earned a strikeout but North Georgia bats came to life in the bottom of the six scoring 12 runs to finish the game.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 2, KING 8
Game two of the day for Florida Southern looked to fall in the favor of the Mocs as senior
Kelsey Peck hit her third home run of the season in the first at-bat of game two. The Tornados tied it in the following inning on an RBI single to make it 1-1. The Mocs answered back with another Peck RBI, this one a sac fly scoring Bryson who singled down the left field line.
FSC was up 2-1 but not for long as King hit a homer of their own that tied the game back up again 2-2 after two complete innings. In the third, the Tornados took the lead off a home run and it stayed at 3-2 until the bottom of the fourth.
In the fourth, King took a big lead off a grand slam that made it impossible for FSC to come back from and took game two of the day.
Junior
Ashley Blessin pitched all seven innings striking out four batters.
