ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's tennis team tallied its first conference win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Eckerd College Saturday afternoon at the Fred Bullard Courts. Mocs are registering votes in the latest ITA Division II poll announced yesterday by the organization.
The Mocs (2-2, 1-2 SSC) won its first road match of the season with a sweep of the doubles courts and all but one of the singles courts. The Tritons lost their first match of the season with one point on the #2 court.
In doubles, the Mocs battled for every point, including a tiebreak needed for the first two courts.
Chris Fok Kow and
Matteo Feggi, both named as SSC Athlete of the Week the last two weeks, won the tiebreak 7-5 for the court win over their Eckerd opponents. The same situation for
Mario Garoz and
Ryan Rajakar, as they outlasted the Tritons with a 7-3 tiebreak.
Inaki Braun Simo and
Danny Thomas won their flight 7-5.
For singles competition, Florida Southern had great success, giving up few points on most of the courts. Braun Simo took #1 this afternoon and won 6-3, 6-1. Garoz followed his doubles performance with a 6-2, 6-0 victory on #3 as did Feggi on #5 court with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
On the #6 court, John Gidejford won 6-1, 6-3 as Elliot Altman won his first set 6-0, but dropped his second to send into a tiebreak. Altman won the battle 10-6 with the only Moccasin loss on the #2 court by Fok Kow.
Mocs travel back home to face Bates on Tuesday, Feb. 21, set for a 3 p.m. start at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
