MIAMI SHORES, FLA. - Florida Southern College softball team split the doubleheader to close out the Sunshine State Conference series opener against Barry on Saturday afternoon. With the split, the Mocs move to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the SSC.
FSC took game one of the doubleheader 3-1 before falling in the finale 4-0.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 3, BARRY 1
FSC started the game off strong as leadoff batter, senior
Kelsey Peck singled on a bunt and stole second to put her into scoring position. With Peck in scoring position, freshman
Kenleigh Smith doubled to left center field for an RBI and put the Mocs up 1-0 with no outs.
Taylor Thomas would step in in cleanup and single to the shortstop that scored Smith allowing FSC to get out to an early 2-0 lead after just one inning of the play.
In the top of the second, sophomore
Jadyn Bushnell reached on a fielding error, which benefited the Mocs later as Bushnell scored to make it 3-0 with an RBI single from Peck to left center field.
In the bottom of the fourth, Barry rallied their way within two scoring on an RBI single to make it 3-1 and ultimately concluded the game in favor of the Mocs to take game two of the series with a 3-1 decision.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 0, BARRY 4
The Mocs looked to start game two of the doubleheader the same as game one with a double to left field by Thomas but was left stranded. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth as the Bucs scored off an RBI single to left field and a sac bunt to make it 2-0.
In the bottom of the sixth Barry opened up action with a double and a single that allowed the Bucs to score two more runs that concluded the game with a 4-0 win as Barry took the series 2-1.
Florida Southern was led by Peck going 2-for-4 in game one with one run and an RBI followed by Smith, Thomas, Bushnell, and
Skyler Ralstin all having one hit. In game two the Mocs had just two hits as Thomas went 1-for-3 and Ralstin went 1-for-2.
In the circle, junior
Mel Rogers collected her third win of the season pitching a complete game while striking out two batters.

Florida Southern will continue conference action as they host Eckerd with the single game being Friday at 6:00 p.m. followed by the doubleheader on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
